An away win :-) and a clean sheet:-) :-) and Calum looked gorgeous too :-) :-) :-) . What more can we ask.

Well said SY

I thought chambers was outstanding.

Meant to say well done to Ainsley Maitland-Niles who normally gets a lot of stick yet I thought he played well - nice pace, attacking, couple of great tackles plus an assist 👍.

Good result, clean sheet and no keystone cops defending! Thought our passing was very good today but in my best eleven only Leno and PEA make it from starting eleven when all fit or able to play. Excited for when we are all available. Leno Hector Luiz Holding Tierney Ceballos Lucas Ozil PEA Laca Pepe. Well done today! COYG.

I’m a very big critic of Chambers BUT he had a solid no nonsense game

Well done chaps.

I think you will only ever get to see that 11 actually happen if injury absolutely forced it Sussex mate, Papa is nailed on cert in Emerys best 11 while Mesut isn't anywhere close and Xhaka will never be far from the starting line-up in my opinion whether any of use love it or not.
I think both Chambers and Holding will get first choice action in a 3 CB defence at times throughout the season but Mesut is going to need to Get himself a memory foam cushion and comfy slippers for the season unless the US rumour comes to anything.

If I'm brutally honest, I feel disappointed by the result and also by our play. Yes, a few of the players were individually good - like Chambers, AMN and Guen, but we looked flat and out of ideas from the start. We'd get turned over in midfield by better opposition.

Still though, a win and a clean sheet, so happy for the team.

11 Aug 2019 17:29:22
G62, I'll Leave Chambers to you, but only because you saw him first. Phwoar!

11 Aug 2019 17:42:35
Some good individual performances with Chambers, Willock and Aubu having decent games. A win is all you can ask of in the first game and an away win at that. We were far from our fluid best in quite scrappy sort of game but we looked relativly solid defensively for a change away from home and once everyone is really match sharp and fit we will get better. Xakha I still think is weak link in midfield and Miki often fails to impress. I think Guendouzi and Torrira should be our defensive midfielders.

I don't mind sharing Calum with other admirers Sharpie mate, I'm a realist and accept I could never contain such a fine beast of a man all to myself mate, my Calum is your Calum is our Calum.
Well until he's loaned out that is :-)

11 Aug 2019 18:01:35
Sharpey just look how many potential starters missed the kick off it was a decent 3 points.

11 Aug 2019 18:14:52
No teams are at their best in the opening 2 to 3 weeks which I know looks scary if you think about City and Liverpool but luckily the rule applies to West ham and Norwich too :-)
How many times have we lost on opening day in the last 5 so years? More often than not is the answer.
Good result and 3 points that hopefully will prove very handy next May.

11 Aug 2019 18:37:29
Wwaw good result bit of a boring match for me Nice to see the youngsters do well.

11 Aug 2019 18:46:14
Don't get me wrong lads, I appreciate the win, and I also appreciate we didn't have a few of our regular starters. I'm just saying the whole affair seemed a bit flat and like if we were up against stronger opposition, we'd not have come away with a point.

I'm obviously happy for the win, just giving my honest assessment of the game.

G62, sorry mate, I don't share well.

11 Aug 2019 19:10:23
Fair play Sharpie but you can't expect a man like Calum to chose, where would he even begin.
On today's game I respect your view mate but I'm not expecting Liverpool or City like performances from us just much better ones than last season, in the opening couple of games performance is nowhere near as important as results but over the season of course it's overall performances that will dictate our final postistion.
If we'd won 0 8 today I wouldn't have thought we could win the league suddenly and if we'd lost 3 0 I wouldn't have thought championship here we come either:-) .
By September things will settle for all clubs and we will start to see who's really hot and who's definitely not.

I get where you're coming from G62, but for me, whenever I watch Arsenal play, I expect to see a bit off panache and swagger. Even if we win by a solitary goal, like we're did today, I always want to see our players walk of the pitch with nothing left in the tank. Maybe I'm just being nostalgic.

11 Aug 2019 20:51:37
Sharpie ( if I can call you that ) - I understand your point. We were a little flat, our inexperienced youth players at times showed they were kids, movement wasn’t fantastic and it was a bit boring. But it’s the first game, Newcastle did not cause the defence harm, we looked rusty, disjointed and flat but we kept a clean sheet away from home, had a superb bench with more players to come into the team and we won. We’ve equaled last seasons away clean sheet tally already! I know offensively we will tick. I thought the reserve back 4 did really well with Chambers and AMN doing exceptionally well. The youngsters really shown at times in attack as well. A good but boring day in the office. How many times have we played well and taken zero points?

Hopefully it’s a base to build from& it certainly wasn't a lucky win COYG.
