It is interesting that Xhaka is constantly criticised by fans, yet selected by highly regarded trophy winning managers, Emery and Wenger. Indeed, he is one of Emery's captains.
Our midfield weren't at their best yesterday, but we were away to CL winners Liverpool, who will drop few points at home this season. I thought Willock and Guendouzi showed their inexperience, whilst Ceballos was chasing shadows. I would have liked us to start with Torreira, who improved things once he came on. Perhaps a midfield three of Torreira, Ceballos and Xhaka would have worked better, with Pepe, Lacazette and Aubameyang up top.
One particular fan on this site is critical of Emery, which I fail to understand, as there was a definite improvement last season and with Chelsea and United not looking great this season, he may well secure a top four place and CL qualification.

I don't get it either mate, some people hey! Who could not appreciate both Emery and Xhaka undeniable talents when you only have to look at both player and managers outstanding records in qualifying for champions league in the world's most difficult leagues Spain Germany and of course the premier league.
If they aren't both proven quality then how come their outstanding records reputations in Europe's elite competition?
I guess some people just won't be wrong about some things hey mate :-)

I was a Xhaka fan and argued with a number of people to defend him. However, I’ve readjusted my position - he just doesn’t react or think quick enough for epl in my opinion and as a result will play safe, get caught in possession, give away possession Or a silly free kick. Just my opinion.

Put him in a slower league and he will look great with his Roy of the Rovers passing. Probably ok in Europe but not EPL.

On Emery - I have nothing to judge him on except his poor form and decision making for us. He has to prove his worth to me as it’s not a right. At present I’ve not seen anything from him hence I’m critical and our manager should not be above criticism especially when we are celebrating our best defeat at Anfield as a mark of improvement. Our defence is a joke and he’s not drilled in any discipline nor put a midfield in front of them to help or stuck to a formation to build confidence upon or signed players earlier to start training them. when he’s earned the defensive coach badge - I will post and say well done. I’m not right very often and not afraid to be wrong but at present he’s a grade C.

Is Emerys Europa league record a good or bad thing?
On the face of it 3 wins on the trot and a runners up spot look impressive but how does a team qualify for the Europa league in he first place? And how does a team successfully defend the Europa league twice?
Sorry but Champions league failure is the only key that opens the europa league door.
From what I've seen of Xhaka over the last 3 seasons he looks every inch the Europa league player he has been proven to be since he arrived while Emery has only had 1 season so we need to take another look this season but from what I saw in his first season with us it's has given me a little more understanding of his champions league record might be less than prestigious while his europa league record is outstanding.

Pochettino is supposed to be the best thing since sliced bread and yet he hasn't won a single trophy, whilst Emery has picked up 10 trophies.
I have a very positive vibe about this season, especially as Chelsea can't make signings and have sold Hazzard, Luiz, Mortata, and Hudson-Odoi to injury. Man U look a mess, with a poor manager, Pogba unsettled and some sub-standard players. I am not too sure about the Toot, they have huge problems with Eriksen and Vertonghen, as well as other players in the last year of their their contracts: Rose and Alderweirald. They looked dire today.
Great day, England beating the Aussies and the Toot losing to lowly Newcastle.

I said from day one about Xhaka we paid 29 million too much for him, he has a level and it’s not in a top four team guess that’s why he plays for us.

RG you have a positive vibe about this season because our direct rivals are in a mess, is that our ambition? I’m sure if you give Pochettino the psg job he can easy secure the league and get then to the CL final.

I didn't really know him before he became an Arsenal player but after about 7 or 8 games on had my doubts and after a season and half of was 100% convinced Arsene had done it again, Mustafi had me worried from 3 or 4 games in and the more I see of him the more convinced I became of his mentality weaknesses which lead to so many goals conceded.
They were both equally poor buys but one is unwanted while the other is made captain and keeps Torreira out of the team, go figure?

SY Emery does not sign players he's a head coach that's all Raul and them other fellas I know you want to blame him for everything but stick to facts.

25 Aug 2019 21:55:58
Noted - but to be fair I’ve blasted him for far more than the late signings bud. I still think he should be knocking on the person who needs to sign player to hurry the F up to give him a fighting chance.
I will stick to his rubbish tactics and poor defensive coaching plus poor team set up. I’m sure you agree he’s done zero effective coaching of the defence or defence set up.
I will stick to his tinkering and inability to pick a captain.
His job is to coach - then he’s not done well coaching the defence or defensive midfield. He didn’t need to coach the attack - so what’s he been doing?

{Ed047's Note - I thought he’d spent the off season having his teeth done, new set of the old sparkly whites. They do look smashing mind. 😬

Poch is a champions league manager while Emery so far in his career has been very much a Europa league manager everywhere other than at PSG where he managed to somehow finish second in the group stages to a struggling Arsene and then somehow blow a 4 0 first leg lead in a champions league quarter final.

Poch is a champions league regular qualifer through Europe's toughest league while Emery has only ever taken Frances equivalent of Celtic into the champions league through league qualification.

He did takes Savile into the champions league via winning the Europa league and successfully managed to retain the Europa league by failing to progress to the latter stages of the champions league, thus far in his career Emery is a proven Europa league manager and champions league wannabe, we have to hope that will change because I'm pretty sure
When we advertised for a replacement for Arsene did we state champions league manager or Europa league manager wanted in the ad :-)

In the same transfer window we bought Xhaka, Chelsea bought Kante for £2m more. I heard a rumour that Kante had pretty muched packed his bags for us but Wenger decided on Xhaka.
