By my reckoning we have about 18 players throughout our entire playing staff who's contracts are up or have a year to go. For the life of me I don't see how Arsenal could have let this happen. Is it penny pinching not wanting to negotiate with players until the last minute to save a few quid, or is it a gross dereliction of duty. How can we plan for additions to the squads when we don't know who will be here from this number. Added to that we now seem to be reverting to type and penny pinching on people we want to attract. We are not in a position where we can afford to let other clubs steal the march on us for players. After all the talk of Arsene having his wings clipped, we can now see that nothing has changed and we dither over transfers until the last day of the window. Not looking forward to next season or the atmosphere at our games. Come on Arsenal and Arsene the official transfer window is open tomorrow, prove me wrong, it would make me so happy.

The false economy policing is a fair point N7 mate, it's backfired so often in the past and will always to do not the future.
We might save 5 million in wages in the early stages of not renewing a players deal to early but we give them the upper hand long term when they approach becoming a free agent, Theo is a great example of this as we had two choices with him either let him go on a free losing out on 20 million or give him an extortionate wage to stay.
The same as signing players late in the window to save wages over the summer, we miss out on players who go to other clubs doing this plus when we do finally sign them they are playing catch up without having a preseason to bed in with their new team which affects their performance and our league position which affects our income off the field and competitiveness on it.
Very short sighted counting the pennies and missing the £s in my opinion and has been for years which is why we will be premier league also rans again this season rather than punching at feather weight rather than premier league heavy weights we are so capable of being.

18 members of staff, players, etc, seems a lot. However, don't forget some of these will be relatively straightforward. I can't believe that Arsenal are so inept for there not to be a strategy in this or are we simply poor at negotiating such matters?

Robbie G61.
Here is my list of Contracts up in 2017. Josh Dasilva. Glenn Kamara. Julio Pleguezuelo Selva. Jon Toral. Christopher Willock. Contracts up in 2018. Wojciech Szczesny. Kieran Gibbs. Alexis Sánchez. Jack Wilshere. Mesut Ozil. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. Joel Campbell. Jeff Reine-Adelaide. Krystian Bielik. Gedion Zelalem. Ainsley Maitland-Niles. Stephy Mavididi. Daniel Crowley. On top of that we have Mathieu Debuchy 2019. Per Mertesacker and Santi Cazorla who we are not sure if contracts have been extended. If only a few are straightforward that still leaves a lot of players who should have been tied down to contracts sooner. I wonder what Dick Law actually does with his time. Probably waiting for Arsene to make time in his busy schedule of indecision.

Keep the faith lads! We'll still have Coquelin!

Plus van persie and being forced to sell, which looks like the same is going to happen with Sanchez. He should of been given an extension after the first year, but like you say they save a few mil not giving him a raise for a few years, but it doesn't make economic sense in the long run because you're forced in to a lower transfer fee and wages players demand increases.

even if we do manage to get him to sign it will be close to 300k, when if we had offer him the 180k we did a few months back after with a couple years left he probably would of taken it. I think kos and bellerin were left til the last year as well, I think bellerin was kept on 10k a year even having been first choice for a couple seasons, which must of grated, being paid an eighth of someone you are doing more than.

Tottenham in contrast have given deli Ali 3 new contracts in 16 months and knew a new contract even though he still had 3 and a half years left on the old one.
