Apparently (I'm not saying this is true, so don't quote me! ) when asked about Mustafi after the game, Arsene told a journalist 'Yes, we look to get it done, but at the moment we struggle to find players'

Look, I'll stress it again, I don't know if that's true or not, but if it is, it's insane.

Firstly, that we're taking this long to get Mustafi in.
Secondly, how can you not find players?!
Arsenal have a ridiculous amount of scouts, full and part time, all over the world.
If those lads can't find some players to improve the squad, they need to find new jobs.

As a positive, to balance the increasing sadness, Xhaka was tidy today, more of the same please!

D_

1.) 20 Aug 2016 22:24:16
Just wanna correct myself real quick, the actual quote was (apparently) :

'Mustafi? We hope it will be done, we are struggling to find the players we need'

So, same drift, but just didn't want to give people the wrong idea!

2.) 20 Aug 2016 23:17:53
It's not a struggle to find player's.

We find them but don't want to pay the required fee.

3.) 21 Aug 2016 10:14:07
Yes, I fail to understand why we appear to be unable to sign a CB or a striker. If Wenger seriously thinks Chambers is an option at CB, he is deluded. I hate to say it, but he looks dreadful. You ony have to look at Holding who is a couple of years younger, to see how poor Chambers is.

Yesterday the attack looked toothless, as Sanchez is not the answer to play in the central attacking role. Benteke (now not possible) or Bony would have been options, not ideal, but better than anything we have at present, if Giroud is out.

15 Aug 2016 18:24:24
David Ornstein, of the BBC (I know there are mixed opinions of him here! ) says the following;

Arsenal yet to agree fee for Mustafi. #AFC considering Omer Toprak and Simon Kjaer as alternatives but Mustafi remains priority and keen to join

Price the issue. Arsenal want to hold back funds for possible striker signing. #AFC transfer budget factors in fee, salary, agent commission

If this all true or not, I've no idea personally, but that's his line on It!

Hard to know what to believe at the minute from any of the usual channels.

I can see the window shutting with no more signings, I've honestly never felt so despondent about the start of a season, ever.

I'll never speak badly of AW after all he's given us, but until things change he/ we won't be doing anything differently.

2.) 16 Aug 2016 03:12:15
Let's not get too far ahead of ourselves, seasons aren't won and lost on the first week of the season. The last few seasons we've lost the first games of the season and been leading by Christmas. Fatigue and injuries set in and we lose it in the new year. Wenger giving key players a rest is essential to us staying the distance.

If we've learnt anything over the last few seasons it's that big name signings aren't a guarantee of success. I would argue that Leicester won last year primarily because the usual title challengers have been messing up their team cohesion by changing their squads every season. If spending was a guarantee of success then Manchester United would win every year.

The only thing signing players like Zidane and Pogba guarantees you is better shirt sales.

3.) 16 Aug 2016 13:44:25
I don't understand why they state that the players future salary needs to be taken from the transfer budget, it can't be true. You don't save up for a car, then when you go to buy it they ask for an extra lump sum payment to cover your petrol and insurance for the next 5 years. Ultimately future salaries is an annual cost to a business, not a lump sum paid in advance.

4.) 16 Aug 2016 15:06:16
The reality of how and when transfer fees and wages are accounted for is not always instinctive. Transfer fees often include large up-front payments, but player amortisation occurs over the duration of the contract. Read The Swiss Ramble (specifically the 12th paragraph of Show Me The Money) .

When buying a player, you have to consider everything that will affect your your expenses and your revenue. That means the transfer fee, the player's wage, the length of their contract, and any bonuses. And it also means marginal commercial, matchday, and broadcasting revenues. I agree that you don't need to think of a 5-year £100,000 a week contract as being an up-front lump sum payment, but conversely, you can't just pretend it doesn't exist.

12 Aug 2016 20:02:02
Sorry to add to your workload Ed's, but quick question;

I see Barcelona are apparently close to a €25m move for Paco Alcacer.
If it's true/ happens, would this potentially effect any Mustafi move?

i know they're a bit short of cash, but with the Gomes money, would they need to sell both Mustafi and Alcacer?

I could just be reading too much into nothing, to be fair!

D_

{Ed001's Note - they don't need to sell anyone, but they are being run as a shop window for Jorge Mendes' players. So their players are there to be sold for as much as they can get. The issue is that Arsenal will not pay what they want.}

1.) 12 Aug 2016 23:01:16
Ahh, the usual Arsenal chestnut.

Cheers for clearing that up!

2.) 12 Aug 2016 20:19:50
Ed, Do you see that stance changing when we get closer to the window ending? How quickly would you know if that stance changed Ed?

{Ed001's Note - Arsenal change stance? Not under the current regime. I don't just mean Wenger in that, either, I mean the ownership downwards.}

3.) 13 Aug 2016 08:13:48
Why has this only been apparent in the past few years? Or has that been the case for the entirety of Wenger's rein and we haven't been able to notice?

4.) 13 Aug 2016 10:06:59
There is no issue with Mustafi, he should be an Arsenal player by Monday.

5.) 13 Aug 2016 10:27:41
Is your source better than Eds?

{Ed041's Note - apparently so, maybe a lose on Sunday will force wengers hand.

6.) 13 Aug 2016 11:57:00
I don't think Ed001 has much of an idea about what's actually going on at Arsenal, tbh. Remember him being adamant Wenger doesn't want another midfielder days before we officially signed Xhaka. And the deal itself was agreed way before that.

{Ed001's Note - well that is a lie because I have never been adamant about anything regarding Arsenal. So don't know where you got that from, but it seems you dreamt it up to try and make yourself look smarter.}

7.) 13 Aug 2016 19:14:39
And one would suggest it's exactly this kind of thing which pushes ED's away.

You will note this is called Arsenal Rumours, key word, rumours. If it was called Arsenal Guarantees then I might back you, but if that's the information that ED's have then that's what they give.

Having been a regular visitor of this site for a long time, they're often more right than wrong, and it was either ed01 or ed02 that confirmed last year that we were interested in Xhaka, so why not go back and find that to quote.

8.) 13 Aug 2016 23:24:04
I get that pichichi is talking nonsense, but things like that shouldn't push the EDs away really should it.

10 Aug 2016 09:59:53
Apparently we've been unable to agree new deals with Alexis and Mesut.

I don't know if this is just a rehash of not renewing last summer, but if they're rejecting recent renewals, that's worrying.

D_

1.) 10 Aug 2016 10:51:55
i would not be surprised they will be entering the last year of their contracts next summer and if they have not renewed by then it can only be bad news.

kos and per are also on the last year of their contracts.

as per transfermarkt.

players want to see ambition from a club.

the bad news is besides PSG who can pay the wages they want the only other teams are the ones in england so it may hit harder to home if they move elsewhere in the EPL.

with most teams having a playmaker and wingers i do not see the need for either from EPL teams so perhaps that is our saving grace if at all. but if bayern come knocking to replace ribery and robben sanchez is as good as gone.

2.) 10 Aug 2016 14:39:20
Omg ed, reports are saying we've had a 30 million pound bid for mahrez rejected, is that true?

{Ed001's Note - you have had an offer in for him all summer, it is still there if Leicester did decide to sell, but so far they have no interest. I don't know the amount, nor do I see how it matters.}

3.) 10 Aug 2016 16:35:54
Apex, out of interest, what is it with you and Mahrez rumours?!

Are you really that desperate for us to sign him?

4.) 10 Aug 2016 17:56:43
Looool i believe him and sanchez on the wing would be really dangerous with hopefully lewandowski up front.

5.) 10 Aug 2016 22:07:44
Mate.

You are mad as a box of badgers if you think that will ever happen.

Put Chanpionship Manager down and go outside to play. There's a good lad.

04 Aug 2016 17:38:03
David Ornstein has today said that 'AFC interested in Mustafi, no bid yet and others inc CFC keen, also want a striker but not pursuing Mahrez/ Draxler'

As far as I'm concerned, he's probably the most reliable out of all the journo's and 'ITK's' out there, so make of it what you will!

D_

1.) 04 Aug 2016 18:26:55
End of the day D no one has a bloody clue what we are going to do lol.

2.) 04 Aug 2016 20:14:19
He was certainly first with the news Vardy was staying with Leicester and from what I've read about him he does have a very good reputation.

3.) 04 Aug 2016 21:10:52
Yeah yeah!
Who ain't we interested in?
That's the real news
😂.

4.) 04 Aug 2016 21:16:05
Szczesney! :-)

5.) 04 Aug 2016 22:59:13
He states no interest in Mahrez or Draxler from us.

6.) 04 Aug 2016 23:37:00
Yet as the eds have stated.

We've had an offer on the table for Mahrez for a while.

So he's talking dung there.

7.) 04 Aug 2016 23:59:00
He's one of the worst D .

Well, with all the doom and gloom, I thought I'd share another plus with you all ladies and gents!

Guillem Balague says that 'Valencia do not want to sell Mustafi and Arsenal will need to meet his £56m release clause'

So with his track record of talking absolute nonsense, that's about as nailed on as you can get that Mustafi is signing!

D_

{Ed001's Note - didn't he say a few days ago the deal was all but done? Now it is nowhere near. He really should make up his mind. Or at least get the people writing his nonsense to meet up sometimes and get their stories straight.}

1.) 21 Aug 2016 20:29:50
Don't believe him, that's as bad as believing Wenger.

2.) 21 Aug 2016 20:52:40
No disrespect to anyone but all the time people keep reading the rubbish the journalists churn out by the dozen the more they will continue to write it.
Give them and their invented stories a miss and they will stop peddling them, I know bits difficult when your desperate for some news but by giving these people hits your encouraging them to lie to you.

3.) 21 Aug 2016 21:00:59
Agree with that G62,
Best source of info is the Ed's on this page.

Well, apart from Ed041, he supports Utd, so I don't believe a word he says (hi, Chris :-)

4.) 21 Aug 2016 21:58:20
I think he did Ed!
This is the bloke who's apparently Sky's 'La Liga expert'.
Big Dave down the pub would have a better clue what's going on!

Agree totally G62, said this multiple times on here, Arsenal fans are heaven for Journalists.
We're so desperate for a signing, that the second they announce we're 'interested' in someone, half our fans jump on their page/ site/ paper and claim its rubbish and the other half jump on their page/ site/ paper and claim x player is the new messiah.

To be honest with you all lads, I'm still convinced one signing will come in, wether it's Mustafi or not.
I think maybe another could too, but we'd be very lucky if that were the case.

5.) 21 Aug 2016 22:09:46
I think people are learning from the Benzema and co stories Dags mate as this summer especially the last few weeks is the quietest I've ever known this page regarding rubbish rumour repeating.

17 Aug 2016 19:27:47
You know what's bugging me the most?

If we're really haggling over a few million (sounds bad when you put it in normal terms! ) for the Mustafi deal, so we can 'hold back for a striker' then why did we sign Xhaka?

Before I go on, I'm in no way slagging off Granit, I think he was a good signing and apart from needing some disciplinary training, he could be big for us.

But he was by no means a necessary signing.
Even with Arteta and Flamini out, we still had a lot of players in CM, 6 when all fit.

CB, even wasn't really a priority at the start, we did need one, but we could of coped.

A striker WAS, needed.
A striker WAS, necessary.

And still is.

So if we really do have limited budget, why were we splashing £35m on a cm we could of coped without?

It's infuriating.

As a second point, as I'm writing this, Mahrez has signed a new 4 year deal at Leicester.

Banter.

Last window was a joke, but as a one off, it's bareable.

Doing it again is unacceptable and that's the way it looks.

Now apparently Liverpool and Chelsea are in for Mustafi (probably just talk in fairness) which could be a awful for us if true.

Mustafi's father says 2 clubs are in for him.

And now papers are linking is with a move for Jose Maria Giminez of Atleti.

It's so stupid, 'Arsenal are haggling over £5m for an experienced German World Cup winner, but are willing to pay £40m for a 21 year old Uruguayan (albeit a very promising one) with less game time internationally and has only played in one league'

Today's media ladies and gents.

D_

1.) 17 Aug 2016 19:35:30
I think most people have given up on any more signings of note mate, I've never known it so quite during the latter stages of a summer window another indicator of fan apathy I guess.

2.) 17 Aug 2016 19:37:01
Reference the first part of your post I've gone on about that since we signed Xhaka.

3.) 17 Aug 2016 23:38:54
D_, that's Arsenal in a nutshell mate.

15 Aug 2016 10:12:32
How'd you solve a problem like Alexis?

Yesterday, Sanchez looked isolated, lost and disinterested.
Part of that may be because he was playing as a lone forward and that really doesn't suit his style, let's remember, for Chile he plays with Eduardo Vargas, not by himself.

But for me, he barely seemed involved.
Apart from a poor free kick in a decent area and a good run at the end when Santi's cross hit Monreal, what did he really produce?

He may need a game or two to get going, he may still be a little jaded, but to me, he just seemed disinterested and that's a worry.

I'm honestly concerned that he and other players are worried by the lack of activity.
We've already seen Cech, Wilshere and Mertesacker commenting on it in interviews, what if it's affecting the squad?
Say what you will, but a new face raises morale.

Do you think Utd players were upset when Pogba joined?
How about Chelsea's lot and Kante?
Maybe City players kicked up a fuss over Sané.

What do our players have to be happy about?
ANOTHER CM, a 20 year old that COULD be good (in fairness, Rob already looks better than Chambers) and a striker who nobody this side of the orient knew of till last week (again, could be great, are getting a BVB Kagawa or a Utd one? )

There are rumours that Inter will offer £69m for Alexis.
Now, I assume it's rubbish because I'm pretty sure inter are still broke.

But if it's not, look at logic.
Inter may not be on top of the world right now, but they have a decent team, they're improving it year by year, they'd clearly have no problem spending the big bucks and its in a league Alexis likes and has played in.

He'd want out in a shot.
Now, to be honest, for almost £70m I'd let him leave.
2 years on his deal, not looking like signing a new one, we won't reinforce to change his mind, it's probably the best option.

But would we reinvest that cash?
Even if he left right this second, there'd be two weeks of window left and we'd be hearing 'not enough time to replace him'

At the end of the day, the lad looked annoyed and can you blame him?

All these 'ITK's' were saying Mustafi medical today.
Now it's suddenly moved to Wednesday, which if true, means he won't be ready for Leicester anyway.
I wouldn't be surprised if there isn't a Mustafi deal at all and Xhaka is it.

If that's the case, can you blame players like Alexis for being naffed and maybe wanting out?

D_

1.) 15 Aug 2016 11:39:37
A lot of guesswork on what everyone is thinking there D, are you sure?

2.) 15 Aug 2016 12:43:13
It's always guesswork with me mate, I don't have any inside track.

A bit of common sense (I can't stress enough that it's only a bit! ) is my only real backing for my claims!

12 Aug 2016 14:53:53
So, let's ditch the topic of transfers once again and do some team discussion!

The way I see it, £35m for Xhaka means he's a nailed on starter, when fit.

Assuming I'm correct (and I always am. ) who do you think we should partner him with?

For me, it should vary, I'd love to see him partnered with Elneny against physical and/ or attacking teams, but when we play teams we can pick apart, then Cazorla or Ramsey.

Midfield is a difficult one for me to be honest, I've already stated my opinion we have the best centre mid in the league (though I know a lot of you ladies and gentlemen, including ed's, disagree! )

I really want to see Ramsey played this season, central and allowed to roam a bit, like for Wales.
But I also want to see Elneny play because I really think he's a cracking player.
Cazorla, too of course, is fantastic, great when he played in pre season, even if we didn't have the most challenging teams till city.

D_

1.) 12 Aug 2016 15:32:28
Think you hit the nail on the head mate! If we need to play more defensive then pair him with le coq or Elneny and play him in the deeper roll with cazorla or Ramsey . For me cazorla when fit should always get the nod.

2.) 12 Aug 2016 17:10:46
Le Coq? He is the real DM we needed for years and his inclusion turned the 14/ 15 around completely, do we now say ok let's go back to make shift DM of sorts like Artetta was?

3.) 12 Aug 2016 17:31:00
I think the point is we now have a player who can be utilised given the opponent and the pattern of the game.

4.) 12 Aug 2016 19:09:24
Elneny Xhaka in middle

Rambo on RHS

Sanchez on LHS

Ozil in the hole

Theo up front for now

defensive midfield for Sunday but pace for the counter.

5.) 12 Aug 2016 20:01:11
I'm not sure Ozil will be playing SY and could see Cazorla or Ramsey in the hole, Coquelin has done nowt wrong and he and Cazorla pre their respective injuries last season were great.

We have so many midfield options it's crazy. Theo, Ox and Sanchez up front with a ton of pace will cause Liverpool problems, especially if they put the ball in the net.

With our young centre backs of whom Beilek and Holding impressed me most may see Coquelin start next to either Xhaka or Elneny. Wenger may even put Monreal next to Holding and Gibbs at left back.

6.) 12 Aug 2016 20:06:15
Yeah, that's what I'm going for too Sanogo, great minds!

I do love Coquelin G62, but I honestly think Elneny is better, he just has more running and transitional play in him.
Coquelin is certainly the player you go to when you just want to cause havoc in the midfield, but for me, Elneny has that Kante style quality where he can run, tackle, mark and distribute to the playmaker.

Mind you mate, I also still believe we're going to sign a striker, so what do I know!

I like the sound of that SY, though I'd like Ox to get a run on the right.
If he plays like he did in preseason and can get some run of games, he could hit form!

7.) 12 Aug 2016 20:14:18
Sy, I'd much rather Campbell out wide. Ramsey is wasted out there but it's a double edged sword having such a large group of talented centre mids.

8.) 12 Aug 2016 20:55:51
For me Le Coq does what it says on the DM tin, sits holds breaks up the opposition attacks, thars what the best of the best Makalele did so simply brilliantly. Plus his range of passing is much better than he is given credit for although he also knows the value of keeping it simple.
Elneny? Eager enthusiastic keen constantly got his hand up asking for the ball who a ok also gets all other the place but not to anywhere near the same effect as Kante.
For me Elneny does have the simplicity or disapline in his make up to be a reliable DM.
Again it's all about opinion but the best DMs to me are happy to be unsung match winners who seldom get the headlines by scoring winners but are only really appreciated 100% when thier missing.

9.) 12 Aug 2016 20:59:35
Totally agree with that NE mate, pick the best team which isn't necessarily always the best 11 players available.

10.) 12 Aug 2016 21:41:47
Ozil won't play surely. So Rambo will probably play behind the forward.

11.) 13 Aug 2016 00:32:15
Forgot about Ozil plus Santi is away. I like my defensive hard working midfield so switch Iwobi into Ozil role and done.

Centre halves Holding and Chambers.

11 Aug 2016 09:05:10
I'm not an ITK, but I've got it on good authority that Mustafi will be announced today.

If he's not, please continue to read this post until it comes true.

1.) 11 Aug 2016 12:25:40
Save this post D_ and keep recycling it fotnightly until end of January window :-)

2.) 11 Aug 2016 15:55:17
It's a real time saver Dags.
Copy it to clipboard, wait till deadline day, switch out Mustafi for Benzema/ Lewandowski/ Messi/ Pele or whoever sky say and you're good to go!

I just saw that installment thing on Twitter (I know, the devil) and if it's true, it's slightly concerning.
Are we really that adamant/ desperate to stick to a smaller budget?

I'm hoping its more a stubbornness thing than it is we're broke or tight.

I hope we're not that desperate mate!

Mangala had potential but looks a trainwreck in the prem, plus they'd probably want close to the £32m paid.

Sakho, I think is a decent defender, but he just seems to have so many little problems off the field and a bit of an attitude too, I'm not a Liverpool fan and don't watch him often, so could be wrong and he could be great/ utter rubbish, but from my limited knowledge, a wide berth mah be the best idea.

I was wondering something along the lines of this earlier (though I have no inside knowledge, just whatever nonsense my brain dreams up) it seems very much 2+2 doesn't it?

Sporting have a striker we're apparently interested in.
They also have a good CB in Oliveira (spelling may be off)
They also have William Carvalho, who we know Arsene likes.

However, when I put 2+2 together with football, i often get 5.

Slimani to me seems just an Algerian Giroud.
I'm not saying he'd be bad, none of us could know that until/ unless we'd seen him in this league, but on paper, kinda think he's just, well, meh.

Carvalho we don't need at all, plenty of CM's but when does that stop Arsene.

Oliveira, is just me doing those bloody maths again.

I reckon there's some sort of legs to what you guys are saying though, I mean, it seems silly to loan out Joel and give up some of our (underrated) firepower, when we're already lacking goals.

It wouldn't shock me if we've given up on a striker and are looking for a winger, so we can play Theo up top full time till Welbz is 'fit' in Jan.

But that's just me!

Andy, why can't we loan him out?
Genuine question incase I'm missing something.
He can't get a work permit, but that doesn't mean we can't loan him abroad, France, Spain, Germany, Holland, all leagues he can head to as far as I'm aware!

D_

{Ed001's Note - glad you asked that as there is absolutely no reason I am aware of that he cannot go out on loan.}

I don't have any 'inside' knowledge, but from what I've read/ listened to and a bit of common sense, I think as far as loans go;

We know chambers is available for loan, Wenger himself said it on Saturday.

Gnabry has a future at Arsenal according to Arsene (I think the lads quality personally, just unlucky with injury last season) but may not play much this season with Theo, Oxlade, Iwobi, Alexis and even Lucas who can all potentially play right and left.
Schalke want him apparently and their sporting director said today he believes 'every club in Germany apart from Bayern would like Gnabry' which is praise indeed!

Debuchy could leave on loan or permanently.
We'd be short at Rb I think if we let him leave, but we do have Mustafi, Holding, Chambers (if he stays) and even at a stretch Coquelin who can play RB is Bellerin is injured.

Jeff is officially a first team player now, so he will most likely go on loan somewhere.

The others you mention are all u21's so I'd imagine they'll stay and train with the youth teams unless someone actively comes in for them, which is lilkely, considering how well some of them are coming along, like Zelalem, Bielik and Willock, who may benefit from playing somewhere else instead of learning in the u21's!

I did bang a little post on here about the UCL draw literally minutes after it got announced mate!
It was relegated to the less popular 'other' posts page though, so don't worry, I've got you on that one!

As far as today's game goes, I'm a little nervous.
Both teams looking for their first win, the atmosphere amongst our fans could get incredibly toxic if we don't win this game and it won't be easy, hopefully Özil will start today and Giroud too, which would give us a focal point up top at least.

A lot of people will still be talking about Lucas/ Mustafi today anyway and there's rumours one or both will be announced after today's game.
Personally, I think IF they are to be announced, it'll only be today if we win.
Losing/ drawing and then being like 'by the way, new signings! ' would be a mistake I think, it'd be a silver lining, but I think people would be too naffed off to appreciate them fully, so maybe Monday/ Tuesday!

I think overall, fans are fickle and the mood around the club is low at the moment, even with two potential signings (maybe more if we're lucky) people are disappointed in how the clubs has performed on and off the pitch, as always a win or two will change that right up.
We've got Chelsea soon too, so we need to get a bit of form going before meeting them.

I'm sure once we hit normal service (assuming we do) then there will be a bit more of an upbeat feel amongst fans!

Do you think you'll challenge for the league Ed?
That's not a troll attempt by the way, a genuine question.

I'm just thinking you've certainly added to your squad well, top players in each department (though their no Takuma Asano! ) but I kinda wonder if your fixture list will be an issue!
Part of me wonders if Jose will just field a weakend team in the Europa and just try to sack it off early, win - win there, either a weaker team does well or they go out and you get less taxing travel.
I don't think it's in Jose's nature though.

I certainly think you'll give it a good crack this season, you'll be a totally different side from last season, but I'm wagering maybe top 4 this season and once Jose drills his ways into your lads, then it'll be a real go of things.

{Ed041's Note - yes I do.

Regardless of the topic, Balague talks utter tosh.
According to him, Lucas and Mustafi were to be announced at 3pm today.

I kinda think he just goes with the tactic of throwi enough mud and some will stick.

Kante had a cracking season, but he doesn't suit our style.
His passing range is bang average and he's a very slight player.

Would he of been good, I don't doubt it.
But Xhaka adds to our style, he's tall, strong and a presence in midfield, he's a top passer and personally I think he changed the tempo along with Santi, when introduced v 'pool and he played excellently v Leicester, two tricky games.

I think he'll be alright mate!
