"Nine players. Nine big, big players"

Er, like, Martinez?

To be fair, Leno did make one great save against Lukaku, and he can't be blamed for yesterdays defeat on his own.

Don't get me wrong, I love his passion and aggression and forward play, but Tierney was out of position for both goals yesterday, and his glass legs, along with those of Martinelli, meant he couldn't last the game.

But the Board - whoever they are - are culpable here, firstly for appointing Arteta and then for sticking with him. He is learing on the job - on he doesn't actually seem to be learning.

Arteta oot.
Conté in. He'd only stay for two seasons at best but, man, he'd sort those players out and wouldn't stand from any nonsense for Edu, Kroenke or anyone else.
We might not play sumptuous football, but we wouldn't finish below West Ham either.

I'm sick of this season already, as it stands. Same old, same old. Bullied by better teams, hopeless against "lesser" ones.

Nine players short Mikel?
One Manager short, more like.

Strongly doubt Conte would play Saka, ESR, etc. Playing youth isn't really a strength on his CV.

2.) 23 Aug 2021 10:32:46
9 players short?
Which 9 who started yesterday's game would not have played all 9 been available?

It can't be Ramsdale Chambers were available so it can't be GK or Rb positions and Xhaka Tierney Saka would have played if the entire squad was fit and well so that leaves a maximum of 6 short and even that 6 is debatable as ERS and Lokonga would most likely have played too, so that leaves 4 short at most.

So, welcome, Nuno Taveres.
Whodunit? (can you see what I did there? ) .

I don't know who is responsible for the purchase of this young man, and I haven't seen him play, so he may - or may not - be a very useful player.
But it's this kind of mismanagement of our assets over the last ten years that baffles me.
Many may say we need back-up to the boy wonder Tierney who has a poor injury record and they are probably right.
So let's get an experienced head in who is tolerant of being a back-up but who, realistically, may expect to get between ten and twenty appearances in over a whole season. It's not like we are shy in offering a 31+ year old a decent pension fund top-up salary, are we?
Or, why not promote a whizz-kid youngster who we have had under our tutelage for three whole years now, from whom we nicked from under the noses of Barcelona, to whit, Joel Lopez, 19.
Now, either he is ready to ne promoted to the first team squad as back up to Kieran, or he isn't. If he isn't, why, after three years are we persisting with him?

Madness.

Sad to read of Paul Mariner's death today at only 68. I am old enough to remember him as a Gunner (and, well before Ipswich, as an Argyle hero when I lived in Devon in the '70's) .
One of the finest mullets of the '70's and '80's and a damned fine striker too. V. sad.

Regardless of whether we wup Sheff U 1 - 6 (we don't "do" clean sheets) or get our pathetic shambling @rses 'umiliated by an already relegated, managerless club this evening, I am firmly in the Arteta "oot" stable - UNLESS he is willing to use th rest of the season usefully and blood some youth.

Arteta effectively "stumbled" across the brilliance of Smith-Rowe and has, to his credit overseen the rise of Saka (not sure how much credit he can take, but it's only fair - I kick him for his piss-poor management of some, so when it goes well, he ought to take some kudos) .

My own view is that in Tierney, Saliba, Holding, Chambers, Martinelli, Azeez, Balogun, Matt Smith, Kido Taylor-Hart, Saka, Smith-Rowe and Pépé (yes, Pépé, he can be very good - it's niot his fault we over paid £72m for him and Arteta drops him like a stone the instant he has a poor game - unlike some I could mention (Xhaka, Luiz, PEA (until recently) ) we have a fantastic kernal of a brilliant young squad.

We do still need to trim the squad and shuffle the pack. I am yet to be convinced of just how good Partey is for instance. Not saying he is poor, but, I haven't seen him do much so far.

I've said it before but I repeat. I'd like us to buy Sander Berge.
I'd like us to replace our goalkeeper with say, oh, I don't know, someone like the Aston Villa goalkeeper, can't remember his name.

I'd like a new right back, because Hec, bless him, is not as good as he once was.

I'd like Edu to go, Joorabchian to do one.

Personally I'd like Lacazette to stay, but I doubt he will and as we have skillfully let him get down to one year left on his contract (D'Oh! ) we simply have to sell him now, Eddie and Reiss to go. Xhaka, Luiz and Willian to go too.

I doubt any of this will happen, or at least only a fraction of it, and I expect we are lumbered with a Trainee Manager until at least Christmas.

Arteta oot.
Adi Hutter in.

The comment about stumbling on Smith-Rowe aren’t true he had Smith-Rowe in his plans till he got an injury in pre-season just wanted to point that out, I agree with the rest 😉 COYG.

I know it is wrong and I am a bad person for it, but I was listening to talksh! te last night when Graham Beecroft reported that Jurgen Klopp had performed a "masterstroke" by playing Fabinho IN HIS CORRECT PLAYING POSITION and that the outcome was transformative. Even the otherwise odious self-promoting windbag Andy Goldstein took the mickey out of dear old Graham for that, and it was laughed at again this morning.
This got me thinking about our dearly beloved Manager. Is he, like Mr Klopp, missing a "masterstroke" or two?
Look, I really WANT to get behind Mikel and allow him time to see his "project" go "BANG" (whatever that means? ) but I also wish he'd stop trying to over-think things, to be too clever, to be so inconsistent in his team selections.
I know it really ages me, but I don't remember teams of the 70's and 80's being "rotated" and key players "rested" so much. "Week off Mr Bremner, fancy a breather? "
I don't think so.
"Lets keep you fresh Mr Souness, sit this one out". Nie tek!

And before anyone says how pointless it is to compare players from different era's (the game is so much faster today, players are so much fitter) I'd counter that the pitches were so much worse to play on, the physical tackling infinitely much harder, the games just as thick-and-fast) and yet many players played 50+ games per season then, week-in, week-out.

My point really is just to implore Mikel Arteta to PLAY HIS BEST TEAM, pretty much every game. I have my opinions who should be in that team, but that doesn't really count for any thing (for the record, don't play Bellerin, Luiz, Xhaka, Nelsom, Nketiah, EVER EVER EVER again: I don't have anything against them personally, I just don't think they are good enough (anymore in the case of Hector) , ever in the other cases) .

Playing our best team, might mean changes for some games, but not five or six players.
Footballers have amazing sports science, fantastic medical care, uber-fitness regimes, play on billiard table pitches and are barely even touched in tackles without being awarded a free kick.
They can hack a few hours a week playing for ten years, without getting too tiredy, surely?

Please Mr Arteta, stop fannying around and thinking you are already Pep Guardiola with Pep Guardiola's squad. You're are not and neither is our squad.

I have oft preached not for knee-jerk reactions - "Klopp was given years etc"- but there's a fine line between having the courage of one's own convictions and pure pig-headed stubbornness.

Arteta out.

Poch in! I mean, what's the worst that could happen? We could go another five seasons without winning owt!?

I know he can make a decent save or two and he did recently, but I remain wholly unconvinced Leno was a better option to keep than Martinez.
David Luiz: keeping him on the pitch was odd, perhaps even foolhardy, but picking him was madness in the first place.
Ceballos - The Emporer's new clothes v2.0
Xhaka - why?

Ozil - he may not be blameless for his miserable position of ostracisation - but the mismanagement of him is extraordinary and fiscally incompetent. None of that may be Arteta's fault on his own, but he must be at least partially culpable.

Pochettino in.
Always liked him, me (ahem. ) .

Couldn’t disagree with that Max.

Poch has said he would never manage the arch rivals of his former clubs, rules out Barcelona Portsmouth Arsenal if he still feels the same.

Fans do continue to criticise Emery, in my view because there remain baffling elements to his leadership; accepting that not all transfers in and out will be done at his sole bidding, there has been some crazy activity:
* Ramsey's allowed departure
* Pepe - who of course could turn out to be very good - ahead of a proven Premier League player in Zaha, who publicly wanted to come, who could have been bought for the same if not less.
* the persisnet caution over playing Lacazette and Aubameyang together when it is plain to see they are a beautiful and harmonious strike force who bring out the best in each other.
* Torreira - by far and away our most effective defensive midfielder last season, but used so sparingly and often being favoured by.
Emery's most baffling muse of all: Xhaka.
I could bang on and on about Xhaka, but simply ask: why? And Captain too? Unfathomable.

To give balance: Iwobi. Up to £35m in total! Genuis, sheer genius.

Tierney just isn’t good enough!
See my post before - great guy, wonderful manner, temperament, attitude, heart etc.
Just not a good enough defender.

Just not quite. Great squad player and if he could work on his defensive positions (and keep fit of course! ) then maybe he could be great, but Zinchenko and Tomi are better.

Unpopular as I know my view will be, because I love his commitment, energy, attitude and general demeanour, I’d let KT go because as exhilarating as he can be going forward, I think he is no more than a reasonable actual defender.
He is regularly caught out of position and seems, in my view, to have forgotten what the very basic duties of a left back in a back four are: that is, defending.
I love KT in many, many ways - see above - but despite being a completely different type of player, offering even greater flexibility and dynamism, I think Zinchenko has already shown KT his deficiencies in spades.
If Real Madrid or somesuch, as I seem to recall reading in the summer want to give us £30m I’d take it and either promote from our U23’s or buy and understudy - Harry Toffolo for example.

Soz to those I might offend, but it’s just a view, and I acknowledge, not an especially vital topic in the days of Crazy Kwarteng, Liz Misstrusst and Jacob.

3 - 0 Saturday, by the way. Stand on me.

Bejaysus, RSharpie!

What would make you happy?
Only two players scored more than twenty goals in the league last season and I think I'm right in saying only two the season before?

I wrote a few weeks back we'd be lucky to get someone as excellent as Gabriel Jesus and I stand by that.

He may not be in the Haaland league of goal scoring - who else is? - and we can't offer Darwen Nunez - who, however good he looks isn't yet tested in the Premier League - the alleged "holy grail" of Champions League football (I loathe the Champions League and no, not because we aren't in it, I don't love when we are) - but he is/ was an integral player in the current league Champions, has scored nearly 100 goals for Pep in under 250 games, came to Citeh not as a number 9 striker and has been sporadically used in a never ending star-studded and rotated forward line up!

What more do you want?

I am very much an "Arteta OOT" campaigner and have been hugely underwhelmed (and still am) by Edu (I saw him on Instagram "welcoming" Vieira - either he is not a natural on camera or he is not the kind of guy I'd want to show propsects around "The ground is heated so it doesn't freeze"! seemed to be his key message! ) but I do tip my hat to them if we bolster our squad with players like Jesus.

Personally, I'm not terribly excited by the possibility of spaffing upwards of £65m on Raphinha, not that he is a bad player, but we already have a decent batch of players in that position, if only we could manage them properly, but I won't say no if we do get him either. So I guess I am no different to you in expressing a view here, anyways, you are perfectly entitled to your opinion Sharpie and I don't mean to be rude in any way.
But I do think getting Jesus is a great coup by our club and give's me more hope than dear young Eddie, no matter how well-intentioned he is.

Have a great summer everyone.

I don't bear a grudge against Eddie, truly. I didn't realise he was injured, and I'm not glad to read this, I just think he is not quite good enough.
But a bit like blooding ESR last season, maybe Lucky Mikel might be forced into playing Balogun, or Pépé up front, forced to give Martinelli some time on the pitch, which he seems hell-bent on not giving him, we rack up a stonking 0 - 4 win and Bob's Yer Uncle!

I was pleased we signed Willian SY4, but then we had the season we have had and he has under-performed so persistently.

And yes gunner 62, 14 (or so) for me should follow Luiz out the door. I am by no means convinced by Arteta - I am (sadly) firmly in the "Arteta - Oot! " camp, but I suspect the Board are sticking with him, and occassionally he does something that makes me think he just could be a decent Manager, and so therefore am I.
Much as I don't want to.

For the record those who I would happily see go are
1. Leno - he's bang average
2. Runarsson - do I need to say more?
3. Hector - I've loved him, but he's past it due to injury and we might get a few decent quid for him, plus I think Chambers has played exceptionally well there, even if he isn't to be our first-choice pick at right back/ right wing back.
4. Dani Ceballos: the Emporer's New Clothes v2.0
5. Granit Xhaka. He's alright. But only once in a hundred games
6. Willian: not the maestro we hoped he be. Chelsea tend to know.
7. Reiss Nelson: he's been here long enough and is just below Premier League class by the look of it.
8. Eddie Nketiah: see Reiss Nelson.
9. Sead Kolasinac: nearly gone. Now just get him gone.
10. Lucas Torreira: I quite liked him, but he's clearly a busted flush under current regime, so let's get some cash back for him.
11. Gunedouzi: boy-child suffering from the horrid disease known to Doctors as "Bendtnerism".
12. Ainsley Maitland-Niles: decent lad, but Arsenal seem hell-bent in never giving him to play in his favoured position and the emergence of other's has shut the door on his Areseanl career, rightly or wrongly.
13. Mavropanos: we simply have enough CD's in Gabriel, Saliba, Holding, Mari, Chambers and Harry Clarke/ Zech Medley/ Omar Rekik.
14. One of PEA or Lacazette. I love them both - mostly - and think Lacazette is mis-managed by Arteta: he is excellent but gets so few decent runs in the team. His contract status is now an issue. Either sell him now or commit to him. PEA is different. We are saddled with him now and of course he can be great. But we have Martinelli, Pépé (yes, Pépé - I like him) Balogun, and if we commit as suggested Lacazette.

I would love to see - and be willing to be patient with Arteta, or whoever is in charge, if we then promoted from the Under 23's and played them to see if they could cut the mustard
* Arthur Okonkwo
* Omar Rekik
* Bola or Lopez as understudy leftback
* Miguel Azeez
* Matt Smith
* Catalin Cirjan
* Folarin Balogun
* Kido Taylor-Hart

Of course, I entirely accept not all our Academy starlets will translate into Premier League players of note - very few do = but Azeez, Balogun and Kido Taylor-Hart are three who have excellent reoputations and are highly thought of. I'm not saying they should all be in the in the starting line up, but get them into the squad.

I'd like to buy someone like Tariq Lamptey, and Sander Berge in to play as a defensive midfielder with Partey and Elneny (not all at once! ) or many on here prefer Bissouma (I don't see it, but sheer weight of volume suggest I might be missing something and the fact that clubs like Liverpool are allegedly interested in him) .
I don't think we have to spend wildly - and anyway, we won't!

I am ambivalent about Odegaard. Good if we get him, not the end of the world if we don't.

I love my cub and feel miserable with watching us becoming also-rans but I'd tolerate a period of not being competing at the top if we showed we at least have a plan, if we play with the verve and brio encapsulated by the likes of Emile Smith-Rowe and Bukayo Sako, with the passion and grit and sheer will to play as best they can in the likes of Rob Holding. Mohammed Elneny, Calum Chambers.

In Pépé, Martinelli, Folarin Balogun we have three players who suggest a position as a striker might be their long-term best positions.

As someone (brilliantly, in my opinion) posted on here very recently, the future (could be) bright. It could be.

If only we had some leadership, guts and a plan.
Edu, Kroenke, Joorabchian et al could do one too. Those would be other great departures from our beloved club.
