I know this is easier said than done and I guess some would question the clubs ambition but or once, I would like to see us make a handful of signings whilst really focusing on the needs of the team. We are in a moment where we need to be careful with funds, as fans we've already been told that we need to sell to buy which is fine so let's do this properly and economically.
For example, Sarr at CB, free agent and relatively low wages in comparison to some players at the club. Todd Cantwell, £15m maybe and once again low wages. If Watford go down then we could also really test them with a bid for Doucoure. If we do end up selling Guendouzi then we could even fund most of that with that money alone theoretically. 3 signings in 3 key areas of the pitch that we need to address. I know we are stacked with CB's but we need to try and offload some. Saliba and Sarr would be good. Xhaka and Doucoure would be a lot stronger in a midfield 3 with Dani Ceballos or Cantwell just ahead of them.
I know we all want players like Partey and I would love us to sign him personally but at the same time, I would like a few names come in to provide us with better squad depth in more than one area.
Who knows what will happen but I don't the 'bargain basement' is always as bad as it seems when you look at some of the talent out there. It's when you look to the bargain basement for past it players which is when the issues arise.

{Ed002's Note - Arsenal have a CB returning from injury, a CB with a new contract and two new CBs joining in addition to three or four others. Sarr is moving elsewhere and not to Arsenal.}

Agree0 Disagree0

I know we won't be signing Sarr Ed, it was an example of a player that we could of looked to whilst being in the position we are in. I know we have a lot of CB's too but that doesn't make them good enough hence why we need to offload some. Saliba, Mari, Holding and Luiz, fine. Chambers, Sokratis and Mustafi should all be moved on if possible, again easier said than done though and Mavropanos is on loan at Stuttgart.

{Ed002's Note - So four should be enough.}

If we stick with a back 3 then we certainly need one more quality CB at least. If one gets injured then that screws us for squad depth in cup games etc.

Each season you could probably name a bargain 11 of new signings who arrived for Modest fees across all 20 premier clubs and make a side that would rival most teams, equally you could pick an 11 of expensive flops who together would probably have been relegated judging by their collective form that season.
Money is a nice luxury that saves you having to work so hard to find good players but with enough effort put into finding players football is full of hidden treasure, Martinelli or Pepe anyone? 7 or 70 million? . Long after the novelty thrill of spending 70 million has worn off the limits on future spending are felt while for 7 million you get 10 Martinelli's and if 3 of the 10 work out your quids in while if 5 out of 10 work out your back to being a force again and you've got players worth much more than you paid for them rather than a lot less.

Couldn't agree more mate.
To be honest, with the players we now have I think the key area we need to get right this summer is the midfield. We need to find the right balance of defensive, box to box and creative players that we can switch around tactically but competently dependant on the opposition. Very rarely do the Arsenal midfielders dominate the game and it's too often that we get out-classed in the middle of the pitch. If that was an area that we could improve tenfold, then I would be confident in saying that our defence and attack would benefit greatly and so would our performances.
How we do that I don't know especially with our current situation in the league and our finances but it can be done with the right smart signings.

Being a soppy woman, I want to wrap my arms around Pepe and take care of him. Ed002 do you think he will be sold to free up funds? I sometimes feel he is too gentle for this tough league.

{Ed002's Note - There is no interest in him.}

The reliable Di Marzio says otherwise regarding Sarr. We are definitely in for him.
