Most of us, including me, were extremely worried about the lack of signings this window, until now!
As possibly the oldest contributor on this site, I can recall the excitement generated by a new signing or two arriving in summers gone by. When an awesome forward, Malcolm MacDonald arrived in the 1970's, I couldn't wait to see him play at the start of the season. Later Bergkamp and Platt arrived. This season with Pepe and Ceballos arriving the excitement has returned and if we can add Tierney, possibly a CB too, it will have been a fabulous summer window.

Next season we have the young talent of Saliba to look forward to. Edu gives reassurance and Sanhelli has done an excellent job. Emery was an excellent appointment, transforming the weak squad he inherited and getting better results than the previous season. An improvement this season will no doubt bring CL football. I can't wait for the season to start.

Surely Emery has to bring improvement this season or all the signings are simply a waste of time and money.
I'd be happy with getting past the 80 points mark for the first time in a decade as that would be undisputed improvement.

I think we all probably understand that we are blowing the next 2/ 3 years transfer fees this summer. However, this makes much more sense to me than our previous business model, as it let's us buy better players rather than spreading it out and having to buy cheap each year, just to end up at the same budget 2/ 3 years down the line. In recent seasons, we can't say for certain who was responsible for our uderperformance, the manager, or a poor squad, and if we again tried to buy cheap, we would probably be in the exact same position come the end of the season. However, now, if we fail to achieve this coming season, then we (and more importantly the owners) will know its 100% attributable to the manager, and can (more cheaply) replace him. Having an acceptance that the manager underachieved tends to ensure the value of your real assets, the players, remains as they are blameless! Therefore we would still own better and more valuable assets (Pepe etc) , who the new manager can choose to sell to re-build, or just get better results. In all i hope its a win win.

Probably clever to spend now as the only other big London club has a transfer ban so aren’t competing with us and driving up prices. Sure we would have missed out on Pépé if they were in the market 👍

Great decision and strategy as long as we can still invest a little next season and don’t do A LEEDS.

Good point about not having to compete with Chelsea this summer SY hadn't consided it before but it certainly wouldn't have harmed us at all.
