Was just thinking of ideal scenarios for our squad for next season (say we win the Europa and have champions league football and money next season) . Obviously more fantasy than reality but have done up a starting XI and rotation XI based on current players and previously identified targets.

Starting XI:
Leno
Bellerin Saliba Gabriel Tierney
Partey Aouar
Odegaard
Saka Auba Pepe

Rotation XI:
New GK
Cedric Holding Mari New LB
Guendouzi Xhaka
Smith Rowe
Willian Nketiah Martinelli

I think there’s obviously a few questions such as: whether Cedric or Bellerin should be first choice, whether we can convince Madrid to sell Odegaard, the Aouar ship has probably sailed and I can’t see xhaka actually not being a mainstay in the first team again next season but I think that is a very young, attacking, strong starting XI. Arteta loves to chop and change things so doubtful you would see that team week in week out but it’d be one hell of a team (atleast on paper) that I believe could firmly make us top 4 contenders.

I think Martinelli should play understudy to Auba next season with the idea that we would phase Auba out the following season and have Martinelli as his natural successor.

What do you guys reckon? Am I living in a fantasy land? 😂

Would like to see your theories for next seasons starting XI.

I genuinely don't think we have 2 seasons with Martinelli Dempo mate, I think it's a use him or lose him situation with Martinelli that will possibly come to a ahead this summer.
The lads to good to be fringe player.

Your starting 11 is far from total fantasy mate as it only requires 1 player to make it possible, although I'm not sure Hector will be an Arsenal player next season, will he?

Cheers for the reply G62!

Hmmm, I agree that Martinelli is being wayyyy under utilised at present but I’d put that down to return from a long term injury. I think when you look at the amount of minutes our fringe players get such as Ceballos, Willian, Mari etc, I believe that if Martinelli could be guaranteed 1000+ minutes next season as understudy we could convince him to stay. Then I would see him as a starter (hopefully through the middle but I think arteta sees him more as a winger ☹️) the following season with Auba being 33/ 34?

If the starting XI above was at our disposal come game week 1 of next season I would be all kinds of excited!

I've seen loads of these potential starting elevens for us next season recently, and most have Odegaard or Aouar starting in front of ESR.
Am I missing something? The kid has been outstanding and brought back creativity to our team, and should be one of the players our team is built round for years to come.

03 Mar 2021 23:56:58
Doubt your lineups personally. I don't think we'll get Aouar, or Odegaard back, Guendouzi will probably go along with Laca, Nketiah, and potentially Nelson, Willock, Maitland-Niles, Bellerin, Willian, Chambers, Torreira and Elneny if they can find buyers. IF it were up to me, which it isn't, I'd try to rehabilitate Mavropanos, Torreira and Nelson, and sell the rest.

Bring Balogun (if he stays) , Azeez, Saliba, Osei-Tutu and Smith into the first team. Make Martinelli and Balogun the understudies to Auba. Push the boat out to sign Odegaard if we can, if not spend it on a high quality CM/ CAM who can compete with Xhaka or give ESR a rest. Bring in a young LB with potential. Bank the rest and spend it on tying down our best players to contracts.

IMO we are not getting anywhere near the top 4 this season and maybe not even the top 6. Take the opportunity to recruit well on the sly, let our brilliant youth players develop, and push hard for a CL spot next season. If we get into the CL, then that's the time to spend big and cement our place/ challenge for the title.

Agree Glenn Smith Rowe starts for me all the time, he has been superb.

04 Mar 2021 07:48:22
Yes I agree too Glen, it's no coincidence that we suddenly started creating chances once ESR was introduced, he has been the link up player that changed things and saw us climb away from the relegation zone.

People were crying out for Mesut to be reintroduced Just to make something, anything happen up front but ESR ended the Ozil debate once and for all with his game changing performances.

I have to admit, although I agree to a level, the ESR hype is built on 2 months of games. Like what, 10 - 15 games? I absolutely agree that he has been brilliant. But to instantly decide to build the team around him is jumping the gun at best. Saka is clearly outstanding, and has shown his level consistently, ESR needs to do the same. If he maintains this level for the next 12 months, then absolutely build the team around him, but this summer we should re-build 'including' him, not 'because' of him.

Wire - I couldn't agree with you more. Exactly what I want from the summer, word for word.

04 Mar 2021 12:37:51
To be fair Glen did say one the players the team should be built around not the player the team should be built around.

If we don't build around Saka ERS Martinelli and Tierney then who?

Brilliant post.
Personally I wouldn’t persevere with Nelson or Torreira but otherwise I completely agree.
I would keep Lacazette if we can, but would definitely want to see Balogun given a decent opportunity.
Oh, and whilst I don’t dislike him, let Hector go. Since his bad injury he just doesn’t cut it at the very top anymore.
Great lad, just sadly passed his best.
Lamptey please.

{Ed077's Note - is it just me or do some of you also think Bellerin doesn't look that great as a RWB? And he seems to have played a lot as a Wing Back post injury.

Also I think, I THINK, he has lost a wee bit of his pace as well.}

05 Mar 2021 00:11:44
Bellerin is definitely one of the weakest players in the our starting eleven, and as you mention Ed he has lost some of his pace. If we can get a good price for him I'd move him on and look at bringing in Lamptey or Aarons.

How about Kevin de Brunye?

While I partially agree with the caution of building the team around ESR I do think all these younger players improve the most by playing regularly in the first XI. They don’t improve sitting on the bench. So what I would caution is going out and signing “competition” in the form of another young player who is perhaps already an international player and therefore more established than ESR, and who would expect to play. That would be a massive kick in the peverbials. Ironically Ozil was the perfect, albeit expensive, competition for the role, as even if he played instead of ESR, he would know that would only be temporary and the role is his longer term. The other benefit of Saka, ESR, Martinelli is they play in the expensive positions, and so could save us an absolute fortune, meaning we could go out and spend decent money elsewhere, for example getting another top tier CM to partner Partey.
