Just how did we let Serge Gnabry go!

Blame wenger.

It's easy to say now that we should've dropped players to make room for Gnabry, but at the time we had Giroud as our main central striker and were trying to fill the 2 wide forward/ wing positions with Alexis Sanchez, Theo, Joel Campbell, Iwobi, the Ox and Welbeck - plus Rosicky, Cazorla and Ozil who were played out wide sometimes too.

Ultimately, Wenger can be blamed for:
- buying Gnabry when he was 15
- giving him a premier league debut at 17
- giving him 14 Prem appearances the following season
- trying to manage Gnabry after the serious knee injury which kept him out for over a year by loaning him out to West Brom the following season to get first team experience
- recalling him from the loan after the West Brom manager decided Gnabry wasn't good enough to play for West Brom and gave him only 1 Prem appearance
- being a decent human being and honest with Gnabry that because of his injury, lack of experience and failed loan spell and others before him in the queue, Wenger couldn't guarantee first team game time, and with 1 year left on his contract reluctantly agreed to let him leave.

Boringly good response Jim.
Still, never let the truth get in the way of a good rant.
WENGER OUT!

sure all top managers have this scenario. Off the top of my head salah de bryne Lukaku at Chelsea Pogba at United. Yes I’m sure worse mistakes were made but it’s history and I for one am positive about what’s happening now not re hashing the past - that’s the boring part COYG.

Stuff I've read suggests that Wenger did want him to stay and terms were agreed for him to sign a new contract. Gnarby however changed his mind. Hardly Wenger's fault. Then again, some people are still grinding their axes long after our greatest ever manager has deparated. Quite sad really.

rubbish happens and would never have seen him if Wenger wasn’t in charge and I doubt he wanted him to go if he gave him his chance at such a young age. He got his head turned. shame but I don’t blame Wenger and it’s history but still painful that we have Pepe when we could have had him plus 70m in the bank.

Hahaha Max. definitely more fun to rant :)

Sussex, totally agree its hard (and that's what managers get paid big money for) and agree there's no point dwelling on the past, but can definitely learn from it so we don't repeat the situation (AMN, willock, ESR)

Sy, i'm sure there were rumours that bayern were getting involved behind the scenes which, if true, would understandably unsettled things. I remember discussing at the time if AW should give Joel more time and Gnabry too and mixed ideas from fans. Hopefully Pepe will still come good - he wasn't second highest scorer in France by luck!
