Watching The Last Dance with MJ - you suddenly realise the importance of a winning mentality in a team and what leadership in the team can do. Competitive training, competitive attitude and a team bond. You can have the best attack but you need defence and spine to get the best out of your stars.
rubbish I miss Keown, Bould, Winterburn, Paddy, Adams, Sol etc - what do we have today
Great show by the way

"Winning has a price. And leadership has a price. So I pulled people along when they didn't want to be pulled; I challenged people when they didn't want to be challenged. And I earned that right because my teammates who came after me didn't endure all the things that I endured.

"Once you joined the team, you lived at a certain standard that I played the game at, and I wasn't going to take anything less. Now if that meant I had to go in there and get in your ass a little bit, then I did that. You ask all my teammates: 'The one thing about Michael Jordan was he never asked me to do something that he didn't do. '

"When people see this, they're going to say, 'Well, he wasn't really a nice guy, he may have been a tyrant. ' Well, that's you: Because you never won anything. I wanted to win, but I wanted them to win and be a part of that as well. Look: I don't have to do this. I'm only doing it because it is who I am. That's how I played the game; that was my mentality. If you don't want to play that way, don't play that way. "

Let's get some of that spirit Mikel.

Gael Clichy said shortly after joining City " at city you tackle properly in training so you can tackle and ride a tackle properly in games, it's so different to Arsenal where tackling isn't allowed in training "
It's impossible to switch on an aggressive competitive winning passionate mentality on a Saturday if everything you do Monday to Friday is passive.
When Arsene banned tackling in training in order to prevent injury it was the beginning of the end of Arsenal as a competitive force.
the ironic thing is once training became passive rather than aggressive our long term in jury record became horrendous as players ability to make and take proper challenge all but vanished.
It will take more than one season to completely change a " nice and easy does it " attitude that was so embedded into the whole club for so long.
Arteta just like anyone who took the job will need time and patience to completely undo the old and bring in a new mentality from top to bottom but what Artetta must do that Emery didn't do is show he is both aware of the problems and actively working towards changing them week by week month by month and year by year if he is to earn the time and patience he will obviously need from fans players and board.

62 - watch the show on Netflix and see how a winner drives the entire team. He’s roasting and pushing his team mates in training and finding every ounce of motivation from around him. That plus raw talent.

Big game on TV this weekend / Anfield 89.

Cesc said it, many have said it and now Cole

The transition in terms of being in a different group, environment and players was easy because at the time when I first started at Arsenal, we had a core – the Keowns, the Seamans, the Vieiras, the Henrys, the Adams’, ” Cole told BBC Sport.

“When they started to leave, I felt there were holes in the culture of what it was that brought success. I just felt it was falling apart a bit, or there were gaps missing and they weren’t filled.

Why were the manager and board blind to it

We lost our mentality, desire to win and determination.

We still haven’t learned our lessons!

Personally I've always felt once the George influence and mentality completely dissolved Arsenes weaknesses became exposed, George was very good and Arsene was equally very good but when the two philosophies and styles were blended together it was as near perfect as you could get.
Arsene was the absolutely perfect man at the absolute perfect time for us and with his inside knowledge of the untapped French market and his visionary playing philosophy plus that all important rock solid foundations he inherited from George the ingredients were perfect for the Arsene to serve us up the most incredible unbelievable unforgettable dishes we have ever known or are likely to know again.
Unfortunately Arsene was allowed to go on too long because neither board or fans were prepared to accept he'd lost his way and and he was unable to adapt with the changing times.
Arsene was allowed to continue 5 to 8 years longer than was good for Arsenal and the longer it went on the deeper the problems took root, 5 to 8 years of consistent steady decline won't and can't be undone in 5 to 8 months SY mate. We are going to have to be patient understanding and accepting of that.
Between Busby and Fergie how long did United have to wait for their time to come again?
Between Dalglish (mark 1) and Klopp Liverpool fans had to wait what 27 years?
There is no magic wand just a lot of trial end error and suck it and see until something somewhere clicks again and we are competitive once more.
On the bright side how lucky were we to have known those unbelievable times at all mate?
