Happy New Year eds, do you know if we are interested in Boateng.

I really don’t think we need another 30+ defender in the team despite their experience and know how. We already have Luiz even though he has never been considered a really top class, but he brings good experience and a winning mentality which we lack badly. The PL is too demanding with most teams pressing with a front three and the midfielders/ defenders squeezing up behind. Furthermore, they are all getting done on the counter. Look how nervous J Evans was against Liverpool and how vulnerable Vertonghen can be.

We might as well rotate what we have if can’t get a loaner. It’s not like buying these guys we win us the league in a season or two (would be nice thought 😁)

I would support waiting until the summer and get a DM + CB within the PL along with Saliba (money already so can’t be rule out - let’s hope he’s really good) to continue our development.

Are you fellows prepared to see armband change soon - maybe after the window? Who is your pick?

Holding would be my pick, I prefer outfielders otherwise I'd also suggest Leno. Rob for me is young but can grow into the role, has shown plenty of fire against the likes of Costa and nobody else really strikes me as the right choice. Luiz is also an option if he can show that the last two games are the new normal and not the exception to his usual error-proneness, but he is 32 and I'm starting to wonder if we could do with a long term captain the likes of Chelsea have enjoyed.

I can't see much point in buying older players either, like you say if we were in the title race and looking for immediate strengthening then it might be wise but it's not like that.
Luis would be my captain but then again I'd play Luis and Torreira as our middle two.

For now, Luiz. He's the one providing the motivation in the team huddle. He's the one praising the players when we do something well and encourages them when we make mistakes. Did you see him revving up the crowd against Man Utd? Loved that! Arteta has had a massive impact on him already which is great to see.
One very much for the future but Guendouzi could well be an Arsenal captain one day. He needs nurturing and coaching and I truly believe that Arteta will bring out the best in him. He has the passion, energy and courage to be the captain one day. I'm excited to see how he grows and progresses over the next 2 or 3 seasons.

Interesting that we want another CB in the January window, as we already have: Sokratis, Luiz, Mustafi, Holding and Mavrapanos, which should be ample. Next season Saliba arrives. I would assume that in the summer we may sell Mustafi and Mavrapanos. Sokratis may also be sold in the summer as his contract will have one more season to run and he will turn 32 in June.

So a summer CB acquisition may be on the cards. However, with both our left backs injured, a CB that can also play at LB may be a sensible signing. Hence Boateng, although he appears to be on the decline, turning 32 in September. Ben Godfrey from Norwich looks an excellent prospect although I am not sure if can cover at LB?

I'm with you 100% on Guendouzi Glen mate, obviously both he and Martinelli are still young and have a lot learn still but despite their young ages neither looks out of place in the premier league already.
I think both will have huge futures in the game and if we can hang onto them both it will go a long way towards us getting back to the best we can be again.

Just read that Bayern will allow Boateng to go on a free as his wages are £195,000 per week. So signing him for a couple of seasons for no fee may appeal.
I also like the look of Max Aarons at Norwich, but he will cost a substantial fee. Perhaps a summer signing? Apparently Arteta is not convinced that Bellerin is suitable for his system of play. I too have reservations in respect of Bellerin, as he is defensively inept, with poor defensive positional awareness and an inability to tackle. Despite my concerns about Arteta’s lack of managerial experience he is doing a decent job. Although it’s early days, I am impressed.

Completely agree Gunner mate. Both of them could well be massive players for Arsenal in years to come and I'm confident that Arteta will only improve their game.
Max Aarons would be a fantastic signing but money will put Arsenal off for sure. I saw Ben Godfrey get mentioned earlier to and that again would be a good signing. Ideally though we do need to move some players on so that we can steady the ship. Arsenal and Arteta need to find the right balance of youth and experience which will take time, although I don't agree with bringing in players like Boateng to do that. Players can be 24/ 25 and have many years of experience playing at the top level but the trouble is, they're expensive. We will get there one step at a time!

The thing about Boateng is it's another 10 million a year with no hope of any return, Guendouzi and Martinelli although we want them to be Arsenal players both have real potential to be worth very serious transfer fees in the future which if it came to it could be used to strengthen the squad as Liverpool did with the Courtinho money.

{Ed047's Note - 100% don’t want Boateng. Big step back in my book and a true waste of money.

04 Jan 2020 17:41:31
It's certainly not a forward looking idea Ed047 mate, a year and half Boateng wages is more than Martinelli and Guendouzi cost to buy for the pair, 5 years ago I'd have been very excited about getting him but he's fast approaching the twilight of his career now.

{Ed047's Note - exactly 62 and we have enough older defenders to be honest, all in or approaching the twilight of their own careers.

CB as Liverpool have shown, is a position worth spending big money on the right one although not in United's case.

04 Jan 2020 20:13:35
Absolutely Ed mate, we lost our appreciation and value for defenders and goal keepers under Arsene when everything became forced on a players abilty to create and score goals and stop goals was seen as a very much a lower valued abilty.

Fergie paid 30 million for both Ferdinand and Rooney back when 30 million was a huge amount because he knew their value was totally equal to a team that wanted big prizes.
