WBA confirm an approach has been made for Evans.
Pulis admits that Evans might leave for Arsenal before the transfer window closes.

Not necessarily a bad signing.

1.) 20 Aug 2016 07:50:53
Bit of a stop-gap solution but we could definitely do worse.

2.) 20 Aug 2016 08:31:19
Sylvestre springs to mind.

3.) 20 Aug 2016 08:32:41
Agree. Stop gap until the injury situation improves.

But it just won't appease some fans who are only happy if huge fees are paid.

{Ed025's Note - i dont think its just about huge fees dave the fans want decent quality and imo the likes of evans will not improve the team. a club like arsenal should be aiming higher and its not your money so why would it bother you if they spend big to challenge for honours?, if the likes of koulibaly is available then pay the money and dont just settle for second best in mediocrity like evans, top 4 will be very difficult to achieve this season and if its not achieved by arsenal then its the start of what could turn out a very slippery slope mate, the theory of buying young players and moulding them into great players is admirable but this is the real world, and when the likes of ozil and sanchez are not competing in the CL then as sure as eggs is eggs they will be off..its a massive gamble..

4.) 20 Aug 2016 08:49:02
I don't think this is a fair comparison. Silvestre was 31/ 32 and past it when we signed him Evans is 27/ 28. A few more good years in him.

{Ed025's Note - a few more years i agree Aus...not sure about the good part mate..

5.) 20 Aug 2016 09:57:57
Not a bad signing

We could have had Williams

It's getting like a carry on film.

6.) 20 Aug 2016 10:29:23
16 million for Johny Evans? ManU reject? sooo unhappy I am with that. he is just not good enough wouldn't want him for free. and next signing will be Darren Bent? or Peter Crouch?

7.) 20 Aug 2016 10:43:21
I hope this doesn't happen we really should be raising our standards.

8.) 20 Aug 2016 12:15:35
This is a disgrace. Taking fans for a mug. The board has to go if they buy evans. A player that is a liability. He has experience in premiership but so far he has proven he is a liability.

9.) 20 Aug 2016 12:41:36
He was all over the show at Man U why you think they got rid of him.

10.) 20 Aug 2016 12:59:58
I really don't get it. Surely if we are looking for a bargain basement CB with premiership experience Scott Dann would come cheaper than £16m, or for perhaps just a few quid more Van Djik from Soton. Watching him last night and his distribution is superb, he is an Arsenal type player already, so why we would look at Evans is completely beyond me. Surely it's just a joke right?

11.) 20 Aug 2016 12:43:59
Hello ed, I've seen all the comments about evans so does that mean we are actually going for him? And lastly if we lose today do u see arsene doing a couple of panic buys?

{Ed025's Note - its just speculation at the moment apex and i would hope that they go a bit more up market myself, as regards panic buying i dont see arsene as the type mate but the way things are going at the emirates i would not rule it out..

12.) 20 Aug 2016 13:23:30
If we sign Evans it is a damning indictment of our club and our transfer dealings.

He's a terrible defender and he's also prone to injuries, unless we're buying him as a training dummy for our medical department there is literally no reason to buy him.

13.) 20 Aug 2016 19:05:54
The boards a joke bring back dein and watch the russian open his wallet and wenger to get the team he wants. The board need to all anger resentment should stop at their door.

14.) 20 Aug 2016 19:14:32
This is appalling and I can't believe people are now saying that signing Evans won't be a bad option. The point is we are the Arsenal and we shouldn't even be considering second tier players like Evans and we sould be going for world class or closest as we can get.

{Ed025's Note - im with you BKK, first thing i ask myself after going to a game is have i been entertained?, if i had gone to leicester today the answer would be,,NO, too many lightweights and under achievers in this side.."something is rotten in the city of woolwich" as shakespear would say..very poor imo mate..

15 Jul 2015 13:51:41
Arsene Wenger quoted in the media - no more signings this summer unless pre-season performances indicate the squad still needs strengthening

Massive contrast to the continued speculation in the other areas.

Do Arsenal go into the new season with Cech as the only major addition?

Fatdave

{Ed002's Note - They are still looking to bring in a striker and are going to need to make a decision whether or not they wait on their preferred choice for a defensive midfield player and carry on with what they have.

1.) 15 Jul 2015 14:06:11
Thanks for speedy reply, Ed002 but I have to say: that isn't what Wenger said to the media.

It was almost a return to the stubborn refusal-to-spend Wenger that we all know and love.

Possible disinformation or even expectation management

{Ed001's Note - managers and clubs say what best suits them, not what is the most correct information.}

2.) 15 Jul 2015 14:42:00
Arsenal are the worst for keeping it close to the chest . Whatever is said will be a load of rubbish . Don't listen to wenger

3.) 15 Jul 2015 16:30:49
I tried to tell everyone a couple of days ago that Wenger is done in the transfer market. But all of you said that was crap. He is not and will not sign anymore players for the new season. Nobody at Arsenal is working on negotiations for a new player either. They are all sitting in the boardroom counting the money they are saving while Chelsea and Manu sign good players.

4.) 15 Jul 2015 17:00:57
Falcao good I think not you were told the other day were always active but we work under the radar always have always will so put your dummy back in synaster_1 and get behind the club

5.) 15 Jul 2015 17:23:06
To be honest mate, I say this every single transfer window.

When Arsene Wenger tells you it's Monday, check your phone.

The guy is notoriously secretive, he probably wouldn't give up his transfer plans under torture.

It's a real waiting game for us.

I do believe he'll add players, if they're of sufficient quality.

6.) 15 Jul 2015 17:31:05
I agree. Its quite frustrating!

7.) 15 Jul 2015 18:44:10
So tired of moaning like in synaster's posts, we've seen every single year that whatever Wenger says is not reflected in what we actually do. Just chill.

8.) 15 Jul 2015 20:06:03
Ah i remember the days when Arsene said he didn't know a player called Santiago Cazorla, two days later we signed him!
The moral of the story is never believe Arsene when he talks of transfers

9.) 15 Jul 2015 20:51:32
I wouldn't put an ice cream on what Wenger says

He's a businessman and won't show his hand - why would you? It would only have a negative impact if it doesn't happen. Players & fans plus may drive up price...

He wants to improve the squad as we weren't strong enough but wants to maintain the team spirit - no more than 3 additions.

Give the man a chance as buying a player is not like buying a player on Fifa or bananas from the supermarket

10.) 15 Jul 2015 21:38:53
synaster lol calm down mate. the Eds (whom we all trust) have said we are looking to sign a player or two. whether we actually obtain the player(s) or not is another story

I have been pretty much spot on predicting the last 4 or 5 transfer windows for Arsenal, simply by monitoring a number of different websites and then fusing the info together. I warned last time, for example, that Cech was the only major signing going to happen.

Intriguing therefore to see a story emerging that Wenger will have to sell before he can buy and has a transfer limit of about £60 million.

Thats curious because pretty much everyone knows that Arsenal remain cash rich and have always backed Wenger when necessary.

Its a reliable source but its flying against all the other opinion.

I can only speculate that it might be the first indication that the club is putting pressure on Wenger.

Fatdave

1.) 14 May 2016 13:47:33
Dave,
I have been stating for a while that we don't have huge piles of cash. We have a war chest but it's not exactly increasing year on year plus certain amounts are ring fenced for debt covenants, 45m in player instalments plus last year we still had to fund Cech out of. The cash was overstated as we were going into close season plus had cash from pre sold season tickets with HMRC and wages to pay.

Wenger has over achieved - not by the standards he has set but by his budget. He has made mistakes and not spent but is that due to scarce resources?
At Highbury he was ruthless with players and strengthened every summer. Has he really changed or has the available resources?
Would Jose or Pep put up with such resource?
I don't think Wenger is perfect but definitely the best we can get and uses the budget very well.

Last 6 months worth of accounts - we lost money as a club and since the move have funded the club by real estate and player sales. That's tough as a manager to loss your best players to balance the books - yet we play in Champ League every year.
Like I say - we need a business model change because there is so much money now in football.

We have to do that for Wenger or whoever or accept we won't compete.
We may get lucky like Leicester - once every 100 years but is that what you want.
Once we spend the war chest - where is the money coming from for the season after and after that Wenger is the best option and the finances support the opinion that we can not spend 70 to 80m every season like some fans want.

2.) 14 May 2016 16:53:52
sy4 the stadium funds the loan and players wasges

we got over 60million a year sponsorship deals

there is money there to spend.

3.) 14 May 2016 17:20:18
SY4
Well wrote, we live within our budget some fans want us to go into debt.
Also you did not include the shareholders bubbly.

4.) 14 May 2016 17:50:55
MG, I assume you read the cash flow statement and income statement. If we had so much income and don't spend it, why isn't our cash reserve at 500m or so? We need to up our revenue, it surpassed €300m last year for the first time but still 160m behind Utd! We need to bring in more income to compete.

5.) 14 May 2016 19:02:22
MG, have you read the cash flow and income statements? We aren't in great shape buddy. Then read the notes to the accounts. Last year was the first time our revenue topped €300m which was €160m behind Utd. We need to figure out how to generate more profit and cash to compete. If what you say is true - then our cash balance would be increasing year on year towards the 500m mark but it is not.
New model or be content with what you've got.
No major manager will want to have those constraints.
Wenger is best placed to take care of the team and for me, I would like him to have the extra cash from a new model so he can return us to greatness. He's earned that.

6.) 14 May 2016 21:43:12
Dont worry we won't ever go into debt we have 200 mil float, which will grow while we dont.

04 May 2014 16:45:35
As stated by Wenger, just 2 to 3 major signings expected. Wenger doesn't want to unsettle a squad that he thinks is close to major success. Remy is the obvious forward and relatively inexpensive but Veltman and Aurier have been mentioned.
Fabregas is clearly going to join Man Utd, but that means Strootman might be the midfielder Gunners need

Fatdave

1.) In what way is Fabbers 'clearly going to join United?'

21 Sep 2013 18:32:16
Understand that Manchester United will be back in for Fabregas in January. Unlikely to conclude a deal but a statement of intent for Moyes to return in the summer to conclude a deal.

Fatdave

1.) Do people think wenger would move for Fabregas or not if he became available?

2.) Do you guys honestly need him?

I've seen posts on here saying you don't need him because you've got Ozil who is better (a little flippant IMO) but still, for me he ideally plays deeper, do you really need to replace Ramsey or Wilshere? You already have Arteta as cover and Rosicky to cover Ozil.

If I were in charge of you guys I'd be looking for a quality goal scorer to support Giroud and someone to sure up the defence - either a CB or CDM.
I think Arsenal have made poor choices in terms of recruitment in the recent past which has allowed other teams (including my own, United) to take advantage.

Why don't you just buy players in the actual positions you need for a change? It would seem sensible!

p.s. can't see Fabregas at United in any case so that should not worry you, surely would take a huge decision for him to leave Barca.

3.) If he leaves the place of his childhood he will come home. For me that's the man he is and the reason I would welcome him back gladly. Can we win things without him? Yes of course we can but I think we would win more and win easier if we had him in our side

4.) If he came back I think he'd play deeper, maybe the end for Arteta?

20 Aug 2013 11:34:22
Just a tenuous one: I understand that some consideration has been given to a bid for Benteke from Villa.

Yes, Benteke withdrew his transfer request and signed a new contract - but that is relatively meaningless nowadays. There are some indications that Benteke has a release clause. ahem.

Arsenal need a new forward and there is obvious concern at the club about the limited options available. Arsenal would have to pay a lot, possibly £30 million or more but given the lack of signings, Wenger may feel it necessary to spend more than he would want to.

I am guessing that this sort of deal is more likely to occur closer to deadline day, rather than imminently, albeit those dates are converging quickly

{Ed022's Note - We've heard about more clauses than a Father Christmas convention...}

Shortlist of three: Viera, Allegri and Arteta

Allegri wants too much control and is reluctant to leave Juve.

Arteta is the likely appointee.

most clubs are moving towards the "continental" system of the club having transfers controlled by someone other than the manager.

It makes perfect sense, when so much money is involved.

Transfer policy has to be longer term.

Benitez is absolutely not in Arsenal's sights. He is definitely not what the club needs or wants. Benitez might be a very good manager but he is a cheque book manager, never happier than when he is spending other people's money.

When he doesn't get that money, he is sly with the media. It causes friction between the club and the fans.

More likely is that his team will play 1-2 "home" games at Arsenal.

NFL games at Wembley and Twickenham have been very successful. And lucrative.

Highly unlikely.

He isn't a team player.

More importantly, Wenger feels let down by the likes of Ozil and Sanchez He bought 2 big names for big money and neither have proven to be reliable.

Buying a big name just isn't going to happen.
