Been seeing seeing a lot of reports that Everton especially and probably Aston villa will bid for nathan Patterson from rangers. Follow rangers religiously and feel certain this guy could be at least as good as Tierney. Really hope we make a move for him.

What's everyone's opinions on the massive decline in defending nowadays? I look at the top defenders in the world just now and can remember some of the AC Milan teams and juventus teams amongst others having 3rd choice cb's at there level.

It's mental mate the lack of quality defenders these days. Years ago you couldn't count on two hands the amount of world class defenders whereas now I can't can count them on one hand.

2.) 18 Dec 2018 09:45:44
Too many snowflakes in the game now, they don't want to get hurt, nowadays they want the centre backs to be able to play out the ball with a nice pass,
Give me a central defender that will take man, ball the lot with him, like a Tony Adams or a vidic.

3.) 18 Dec 2018 11:33:34
I can remember players like costacurta struggling for game time and not mentioned in the same breath as the beat but would probably get in any team in the world right now.

4.) 18 Dec 2018 14:52:02
The game is always doing through fads and fashions and at the moment it's all about what you can do with a ball yourself rather than what you can prevent opponents doing with it.
Goalkeepers now need to be as comfortable with the ball at thier feet as they are coming out for crosses or in their positioning.
City and Pep find success that way so the whole world follows suit sonnet or later someone else will find a different way that surpasses Peps way then it will be all change and everyone copys then instead.
Far too many sheep and far to little diversity in the game at the moment in my opinion.

5.) 18 Dec 2018 17:33:27
In the 90's these guys were great at tackling and positioning and the game then was really physical. You'd think nowadays with it being close to a non contact sport they'd be desperate to excel in those attributes but it seems that they've massively declined.

{Ed001's Note - to me it feels like they spend a little too much time concentrating on what to do with the ball and not enough on how to get it back. Sport is about balance, right now it has gone too far towards attacking, in time it will tip back too far the other way.}

6.) 18 Dec 2018 18:23:11
I was just going to write similar Ed01, i also think managers used to spend more time on the defensive shape years ago and everyone had to learn to defend properly in defence. Now it all about possession and attacking. Even defenders carrying the ball out and right and left backs being the ones who cross the ball in the box. Defending is an art and the art is going out of the game.

{Ed001's Note - very much so. Players find shape work boring, so most of the modern breed of managers avoid it as much as possible.}

got a call from a pro footballer friend yesterday who told me medel to arsenal is 100% done. after telling him he's away to inter he said he'd check and phone straight back. i'm still waiting lol. seems even players are as much in the dark as the rest of us.

That Walcott for Southampton looks like he has potential ?.

Belly

{Ed014's Note - yes he’s a relative youngster too! ?

1.) 08 Apr 2023 21:38:01
Now there's a blast from the past, Theo and the dreaded P word.

Seems like a million years ago now ?????????????.

If you could pick 3 ex arsenal players from the premier league era to add to this team who would you pick and Why?

Belly

1.) 04 Apr 2023 12:43:39
Bergkamp, Vieira and Adams.
The reason I left Thierry out is I think we would to focused on him as the main striker and I think certain players would suffer.
The other player I seriously considered was Pires.

2.) 04 Apr 2023 16:02:49
Petit, described by Adams as the best defensive mid he ever played behind

Berkcamp, best player the Prem ever had

Keown, pace, power, dominance.

3.) 04 Apr 2023 16:06:08
Should have added my reasons sorry
Bergkamp best technical player I have ever seen in a Arsenal shirt
Vieira love to see him alongside Partey or Xhaxa
Tony best capitain and centre half I have seen in a Arsenal shirt.

4.) 04 Apr 2023 18:48:11
I put my red tinted spectacles on whenever this argument is brought up and I always want Henry Bergkamp and Vieira. Always get shouted down with Shearer Ronaldo Drogba Keane but never get an argument over Bergkamp. Best player I`ve seen full stop followed very very very closely by Terry Henry COYG.

5.) 05 Apr 2023 07:47:51
Easy one for me Pires, Henry, Bergkamp.

6.) 05 Apr 2023 07:59:30
Same choices and reasons as me bill.

{Ed014's Note - when you think of those players in that team no others mentioned even came close to playing in a team that played the football we did.

They may have scored goals or had the ability to do countless step overs or finish another players career but none of them do it for me or were good enough to replace what we had in THAT team.

7.) 05 Apr 2023 08:33:08
Me personally Ed mate, I think at that time I didn't realise how good they were.

{Ed014's Note - exactly mate, they were on another level all together

8.) 05 Apr 2023 21:01:38
Pretty much agree with everyone else, Bergkamp, Viera, and Henry. Could Henry’s presence upset the apple cart of our young forward line, who cares, you have a world class player! But for those concerned, how about Gilberto instead of Henry? Absolute dream of a player, and massively underrated IMO, and suddenly no worries over Partey getting injured, you have Gilberto to step in!

9.) 06 Apr 2023 09:29:22
Gilberto one of those players you never noticed when he played but by Christ did we notice when he didn't.
Not sure but I think he went to Pananiokis (apologies for spelling) and got player of the season there.

{Ed025's Note - good player him bill..

10.) 06 Apr 2023 10:15:20
For me it was the midfield

Parlour, paddy and Gilberto.

Just watched the bergkamp wonderland video I got for Xmas 20 odd years ago. Brother got it transferred to dvd for me. It's that good I'd watch it again straight away but wife's having none of it.

Belly

1.) 28 Jul 2021 21:14:32
I'd like to take a look at that myself Belly, I guess it's on YouTube somewhere?

2.) 28 Jul 2021 23:04:53
No idea mate. Got it on an old VHS tape years ago.

3.) 29 Jul 2021 09:27:00
He was world class bergkamp, I've got the hoddle DVD now that's what you call great goals.

Quick question for any of the eds. Say you had a player for sale for £20m but his former club has a 30% sell on fee due. Could a deal be done with the buying team to agree a 4 year loan deal at 5m a year to get round that? Thanks in advance.

Belly

{Ed002's Note - No. This is not a suitable way for Arsenal to cheat.}

1.) 27 Jan 2021 09:13:09
Quite, we do have some standards. There is a lot wrong with our club, but we are not Tottenham. :)

09 Jan 2021 21:58:45
Being Scottish I am a massive rangers fan as well as arsenal. Must have watched at least 40 games Tierney played for Celtic and although being far to good for the Scottish League never thought he'd be anything more than decent for us. Every time he plays he impresses me even more. Starting to worry the very top teams will be coming for him soon.

Belly

1.) 09 Jan 2021 22:23:20
Tierney is fantastic player, I would have sold him last summer because of his injuries but that would have been a big mistake, A HUGE mistake!

{Ed047's Note - hey 62, off subject but any chance you can pop over to the spuds page a give a bit of support to the raver.

He’s just posted he’s leaving the site which is really unlike him.

Thanks mate and hope you don’t mind me asking.

2.) 09 Jan 2021 22:33:28
I tried, can’t even have a spud feeling down in these current times Ed.

{Ed047's Note - thanks mate, much appreciated

3.) 09 Jan 2021 22:41:31
Dang! They don’t do much banter over on that spuds page do they, hardly anyone posting although ed02 has an extremely long post over there, I think he’s a secret spud 😂.

4.) 09 Jan 2021 22:49:49
Hi Ed047, will pop over now!

{Ed047's Note - thanks mate 👍🏼

5.) 09 Jan 2021 22:59:19

Belly

{Ed002's Note - Yes there have been discussions with Aston Villa but it is not cut and dried.}

I think draxler would be the best signing we could make. sort out the lw with one of the best in the world and allow pod to play as striker to give us the depth we need there.
