Does anyone recall that the banks insisted that Wenger stays in order to sanction the stadium loan? If true, this probably included a post-construction tie in.

If he leaves, perhaps the banks still have the right to call in the loans or change the terms/ rate.

Maybe he wants to leave but can't.

Maybe he and us really are trapped.

I would have thought any such deal would have expired by now but it makes me wonder.

Barn, I've never in my life ever heard of a human being being used as a guarantee for a loan. If wenger died, got ill and retired, left through personal reasons, got the sack because we got relegated or any unforseen circumstance we would have the loan pulled out from under us because he didn't meet the condition, is rediculous. I may be wrong but I thought the Emirates took on most of the stadium payments to get the naming rights anyway. Personally I don't believe it, it doesn't sound a very good business agreement to me.

I would be shocked if that's true, I very much doubt the Banks would have any say in who the manager is or his contract. That might be in the Arsenal buisness plan presented to the banks but the bank wouldn't care as long as we are paying the bill on time.

From the Telegraph

Ahead of an unprecedented fan protest on Saturday, Arsène Wenger has revealed for the first time that Arsenal were only lent the majority of their £390 million construction costs for the Emirates after he personally pledged to remain manager for at least five years.

You do get some corporate loans contingent on certain personnel staying. A bank may advance a loan for the specific purpose of expansion only if a key member of staff stays because they have the experience to make it succeed. Same way you can purchase keyman insurance if a member of staff is crucial to your operations.

Not sure if that was true of Arsenal's loan though.

Not sure why you have so many disagrees SY4 when it only takes a quick Google to clarify that the Torygraph did indeed write that paragraph, that's a fact - whether the statement is true is another thing but I'd be a bit ticked off if so because it means Wenger is inclined to never change in that respect unless he wants to pee off the loaners.

Wenger steered us through a very difficult period, during the financing and building of the new stadium. The debt is virtually paid off and we have in excess of £200m in cash reserves at the bank. The club is run superbly and although us fans always thing we can spend, spend, spend, the funds are not bottomless, unlike other clubs. We could however, easily buy a couple more quality players, but I understand Wenger's hesitancy to pay excessive prices for players; is Mustafi worth £50m?

RG, if you think the club is being run superbly, you're going to wet your pants when it actually is.

The current set up is great for Kroenke but he's holding a deteriorating asset in my view. Like a landlord who doesn't repair leaky guttering or drains, eventually the building will need major works.

And there's a stench of rot at Arsenal.

Great point barn, couldn't agree more.
