Why do people want us to finish top 4? We're just going to be humiliated and lose squad confidence in the CL. Surely playing Europa League would give us time to get the squad together and give us a second route into the CL the following season. We're not going to get any big bucks signings, so why not accept we're currently not good enough and plan strategically for the future - however many seasons that is - and take some time to try and bring through the youngsters too?

Because it gives us more pull in the transfer market? Because its something worth achieving? Because it'll help us keep the players worth keeping?

There is no point in trying to sort a squad out worthy of the champions league, whilst in the europa league?

We are never going to be breaking the bank anymore, so if we can get into the champions league, we need to do it ASAP.

I understand what you're saying, but aside from the club wanting the money, Which I obviously is pretty important to the club

Which transfer targets are not going to come to us because we're not in the CL? Only if they're unwanted by man c, man u, Liverpool. Perhaps a player we, Chelsea and spurs want might prefer spurs or (depending on results) Chelsea over us, but that player would have to think they could play before Son, Moura, Alderweireld - unlikely, or Hazard even less likely but I doubt. Willian and Pedro possibly. If Hazard goes, then that's the only real situation I can see us wanting a rw and not being in the CL and them preferring Chelsea. Or a Spanish or German team, but then I don't think not joining us is really about CL.

As for a worthy goal - I personally don't class fluking our way in by being the least worst team out of Chelsea, spurs, Manu an achievement. and certainly not if we don't use the extra money to be competitive. More likely we'll have a thin squad, would still try and play a full strength team but overstretch and undermine the performance in the Prem and get battered in the CL.

Keeping current players? In theory I'd agree, but if you're good enough to play in the CL (Auba, Laca, sok, Ozil, torreira) would being in a team that isn't competitive and not investing just highlight the need to move?

If preparing for the following season by bedding in Nelson, AMN, and maybe nkeitah and Bielik etc was planned, that would make perfect sense - unless we're going to recruit properly. But we all doubt that right? Those we'd want we can't get or can't get.

I do think the other top 4 chasers in England, plus Barcelona real Juve all look a lot weaker than they have for ages so a good time to try and exploit it, but as long as we don't undermine longer term progress. Is one seasons CL money badly spent and overstretching better? I would hope the club know.

Actually, I've not watched Juve and Real and just spouting what I've heard lol but Barcelona have looked pretty average apart from Messi.

Jim, i want us to finish in the top four but i also don't want us to get into a situation where we can't grow because we are not up to that standard yet. I've said if it helps us to get better as we go along, i'm all for EL football again next year. We aren't a club that's going to buy big to improve. We need a steady push forwards and build at a steady sustaining rate. We need the CL kudos and money and that will be great but if we don't get it, we will have more time to build a squad. We need to integrate our youngsters as well and maybe they won't get that chance if we are up against it in the CL. We haven't been competative in that for a few years.

English clubs have been progressing well in the champions league the last couple of seasons and if we do make its really important we don't do our usual and be last 16 also rans or worse. It would be really embarrassing to be the only non English QF team again.
Rather than that I'd rather wait a bit if need be, our reputation needs raising in Europe not reinforcing.

Yep Steve, I agree with you. I obviously WANT us to not just finish top 4 but be competing for the Prem and competitive in CL. I am just questioning how that is best done.

Im sure Everton, Watford, wolves are now also demanding challenging top 4 etc. But we have a big club with an incredible fanbase and great infrastructure and I just hope we use that intelligently and not just throw money at it, especially not token amounts that fill one gap whilst two others appear. For me, CL football with our current structure/ management means we'll never become better than we were under AW. I would love to be wrong though!

I can't see the point of champions league participation without the 100% determination and accountability to make an impact that states this is a different Arsenal to when we last took part.

Last 16 of the champions league wouldn't be progress it would simply be replication of what we were all fed up with before.
If we make the champions league next season we should demand that Dick does better than Arsene could manage or make way for his replacement, no one voted for a change of manager but other than that to be what we were before.
