Use our rumours form to send us arsenal transfer rumours.

Just to change the subject on here slightly, it was nice to see Ed002's excellent Arsenal transfer list on the rumours page. For me, the disappointment is yet again that we seem to be mostly looking outwards from the UK in our search for players, with perhaps only one or two options being existing UK or premiership based players. Yes that has worked before, with Torriera and Guendozi looking good purchases, but to balance we have Mustufi and Xhaka, who both came in as expensive purchases, and looked good in another league, but can't cut the mustard in the premiership. So is there really no premiership or British based players who would be worth a punt, who could improve our squad, even at the so called inflated price that comes with them? For CB, how about Coady from Wolves, or Lacelles from Newcastle, or even Ben Godfrey from Norwich? Are they all not better options than another potential Mustafi? What about replacements for Ramsey, apart from the two Bournemouth players already linked? How about Ward-Prowse from Southampton? Should we manage to ship out Xhaka, who could replace him, perhaps Declan Rice, or even Doucoure from Watford (OK so not British but Premiership) For wingers, how about Ryan Sessegnon (or left wing back) . He looked good on the weekend and ended up playing RW, an area we are also looking for according to Ed002. In the past British players have always been deemed expensive and just not good (or dedicated) enough versus their foreign competition, but this seems to be changing now, with perhaps Raheem Sterling being an example of the modern english player, who perhaps 5 years ago would have wasted his ability and career, but who now seems to be one of the first names on both Peps and Gareth Southgates team sheet. English football appears to be going through a long waited purple patch, and it would be a shame if we turned our back on it just to try and buy cheap elsewhere? What do others think?

{Ed002's Note - Part of the problem with going for HG players is the price is always much higher. Sessegnon needs work - he has had a torrid season.}

Agree Epping but Ed has a good point. If Grealish is anywhere near £40m then what does that say for the likes of Maddison, Brooks etc? We could pay inflated prices for HG players but surely our own academy should help somewhat in that respect? If it isn't, then why are we not producing good enough players? I think there is a lot more emphasis on younger players coming through now and it is certainly something we will see more frequently in upcoming seasons. I'm really hoping Nelson, Smith-Rowe, Saka and Nketiah can hit the ground running at premier league level in seasons to come, and that's just a name a few who have excelled under Freddie. I do agree with premier league players though, there are plenty in teams mid-table who we could/ should go for.

I think teams are looking for their home grown players to be just that, its cheaper than buying in HG talent. Then the rest is up to the people in the network to pick out the rest. A lot more teams want to produce HG players for many reasons and one is the price of buying in from elsewhere. The other is, it shows the club is working well from top to bottom. Why have a youth set up, if you can't benifit from it. We arsenal football club need players through the ranks more.

Happy for us to add young players with talent and build towards a plan - happy for Europa football for 3 years if we have a clear plan and strategy to get us properly competing in 3 years. I just don’t see a plan at present - from the board, from the manager, our set up and how we structure both backroom staff and signings

Long term glory over short term trust and error.

Personally I think the trick is to buy ( just examples ) Maddison from Norwich and Mcguire from Hull not either from Leicester when they've already earned a reputation that triples or quadruples their initial fee.
It's not all about buying young but spotting raw or missed talent from the lower divisions in England Ireland Scotland and Wales.
With good scouting and most imporyantly excellent coaches who are brought into the equation before signing players where they have say on where they can or can't improve raw bargain buy players rather than Just be handed them and told do something with him!
If coaches were allowed to have a say and an input as to who they felt they could really improve and who they would struggle to improve before you bought them I think the chances of that player making the grade would increase considerably.
Give a plummer a spanner and he'd know what to do with it but chuck him a fish and he'd probably struggle to deliver a meal worth eating:-)
To me it makes sense to include the people who are expected to develop the raw materials when deciding which ones to buy.
Obviously this isn't an issue when spending 100 million on an established player.
