Which Centre back pairing do fellow Gooners consider will be the best when Koscielny and Mavrapanos are fit?
From:
Holding
Koscielny
Mavrapanos
Mustafi
Sokratis.

Socs and holding.

Scary, all of them have at least one bad mistake in them per game and we don't really know if Kos is ever going to get back to his best. I would have to go sakratis and mustaffi but kos and holding could work if kos isn't over the hill. None of them are nailed on though.

Chambers and Monreal:-)

G62! Absolutely!
Squilacci, Cygan and Stepanovs - What was Wenger thinking!
Djourou and Senderos - What was Wenger thinking!
Pat Howard and Terry Mancini - Shows my age!
Jeff Blockley and Willie Young - Shows my age even more!
John Roberts and Ian Ure! - Put me in an old age home!
Interested to see how many of these players you remember G62!

Geoff Blockley:-) I remember Geoff RG he was a Coventry player who both Arsenal and Leeds wanted and we won, or rather Leeds won because we signed poor old Geoff and they didn't :-)
Willie will always be famous for pulling a very young Paul Allen back in the cup final when he would have been one on one with the keeper something that I believe started the ball rolling for the professional foul red card being introduced.
I remember them all RG some more vaguely than others though I must admit.
How about John Devine Peter Marenello and Brian Hornsby?
Oh and Richie Powling too of course and not forgetting the legends Sammy Nelson Bob Mcnab Pat Rice George Armstrong and Eddie Kelly but to mention a few.

{Ed001's Note - Brian Hornsby I know well G62, his wife was me ma's best mate when I was very small and we moved to Shrewsbury. He had just signed for the Shrews and his missus worked at a place called 'Silhouettes' making clothes with me mam. I can't remember if I am recalling it correctly as I am only going off what I have been told, I was a toddler at the time, but I am pretty sure Graham Turner's wife worked there too. He had just been made player-manager in those days.}

Names from the past G62!
Trevor Ross
John Matthews
Gus Ceasar
Vladimir Petrovich
Jim Furnell
Geoff Barnett
Lee Chapman
John Hawley
Jimmy Rimmer
Alex Cropley

Did you remember all these?

Any supporters under 30 won't have a clue about all these players and probably can't believe that we once finished 17th in the old Div 1, as all they really know is Arsenal under Wenger!

Ed - I remember Graham Taylor well, he tried to sign me as a teenager when he was managing Watford, it would have been about 1978. I had trials the previous year when Watford were managed by Mike Keen, as I was spotted by a scout called Bill McCracken, who was ancient, but had a good eye for talented footballers. My parents wouldn't allow me to sign as they wanted me to complete my education. By the time I graduated from University I was too old for a pro career and played in the Isthmian League and the South Midlands MInerva League. Nostalgia!

Who remembers when Sammy Nelson scored both goals in a 1-1 draw with Coventry and then pulled his shorts down in front of the North Bank.

26 Oct 2018 16:33:39
I was at the match, I had a season ticket in the East Stand Lower seat at Highbury.
I met Sammy Nelson who was one of the old players that would provide entertainment in Club Level at The Emirates. Still looks the same!

Hi Ed001, The Hornby's live in Peterborough now mate and it's either Brian or his wife who works at Peterborough regional college where my wife works, she did tell me which one but I've forgotten now.
I know he still organises ex Arsenal players games or he did a couple of years back at least.
Yes RG I remember them all now you mentioned them exempt Jim Furnell who I can't remember at all, sorry Jim.
I remember Pat Jenninngs trying to punch Sammy Nelson in a cup semi for not being on his post while defending a corner, it was v Orient (I think) , I'm not sure how the cosy club members of our recent past would have handled playing with Pat and the players from that generation :-) I think they've have all put in transfer requests double quick :-)

{Ed001's Note - I remember they had a daughter about my age, but he moved to Sheffield Wednesday and we moved as well, so my parents lost touch with them. Brian's name popped up when I was doing the Jack Charlton article, about Jack signing him from Shrewsbury.}

26 Oct 2018 18:09:34
Really nice people apparently mate, I've never met either, oh I've just remembered it is Mrs Hornsby who works at the college because she was telling my missus about the ex Arsenal charity game Brian was organising a few years back.
Speaking of Turners, does anyone remember Chris Turner the ex CB and Peterborough manager?
He did something no other manager has ever done with any club and no other manager will ever do again either, he took peterborough from 4th division to 1st division in just 2 seasons, any remember how?

{Ed001's Note - me ma always says they were really nice and I vaguely remember them being nice to me when I was a kid.}

Sammy is a lovely guy and a true Gent. Wasn’t he suspended for pulling his shorts down. He did that because he got a lot of stick for not scoring.

Pat is a super guy and probably one of our best keepers in our history - another great steal from Spurs but I feel he’s still a Spurs supporter at heart. He joined along with Willie Young. Great tackle in the FA Cup final.

27 Oct 2018 17:53:46
I think most players have a special elegance to thier original club or at least the one where they originally became well known SY mate.
Somewhere in Ashley Cole there will always be some Arsenal even though things turned sour between him and our fans and it's exactly the same for Sol Campbell with Spurs.

27 Oct 2018 21:45:34
True but Sol refers to Arsenal as us or we.
