It really bugs me that we haven't signed a natural winger in what feels like forever. If you look at the top teams in the league (city, lpool, chelsea) they all play with 2 natural wingers with pace, trickery, and both goals and assists up their sleeves. In contrast, we are currently playing with a striker (allbeit a WC one in auba) and a no. 10 (ozil) , meaning that both their attacking and defensive positioning FOR WINGERS is poor. Both players are always trying to play down the middle up front and in the hole respectively. This a) reduces our team width and therefore threat from wide positions, which results in more defenders marking Laca, and/ or b) results in nacho and bellerin having to provide the width, which in term results in us being EXTREMELY vulnerable to counter attacks as they are usually so far up the pitch. I honestly think 2 natural wingers who also know and understand their defensive duties would take our team to the next level, both directly offensively, and indirectly defensively (taking the burden off the full backs to provide said width) . I really hope at least 1 winger is signed in Jan, and hopefully if Nelson has a successful loan spell in Germany, he can hold down one of the winger positions for years to come.

Not many teams play with out and out wingers anymore in a 4 4 2 system most wingers are now more supporting strikers than traditional wingers as was.
If we buy more winger type players they have to come at the expense of Ozil Pea or Lacasette because you've got to have a midfield 3 that covers the full backs attacks and even then the full backs need to take it in turns rather than both bomb forward at the same time.
We are top heavy with central attacking players and we need to make a chioce on them if we are going to buy new players who are more suited to providing width.
Belerin gets so much stick but he is being asked a lot of in every game to both provide 90% of our width and be an ever reliable full back at the same time.
We need to restructure our squad or find a way of making the players we have gel in their natural positions, Pea is a brilliant round peg being shoehorned in a square hole when played out wide and Lacasette the same if Pea plays central.
Lacasette and Pea down the middle or sell one of them in my opinion and the same with Mesut, play him in yje hole or let him go.

Agree with that Colney, should of cut our losses with Ramsey in the summer and got what we could and replaced him with a winger that better fit emerys system.

imo a winger is one who can hug the touchline, beat full backs to get crosses in and also score from the far post IE your Sanes, Sterlings, Manes, Salahs etc types of players that we simply lack (potentially Iwobi could fill a void here if he keeps up his performances) . A midfield 3 won't have to cover full backs that get forward if full backs don't need to get forward as much due to playing natural wingers who stay wide which was sort of my point. From what I've seen so far if Emery is to stick to his 4231/ 433 (pretty much the same formation IMO) then at least 1 winger is needed (ideally move ozil 10, get a new RW and let Ramsey rot in reserves) whilst Auba needs to be a bit more disciplined with his role if he is to stay as our LW.

On top of that i'd love us to sign an exciting player who can get the crowd going by making full backs look silly e.g zaha. We haven't had a winger who can beat players with skill and pace since Hleb! (Don't argue Sanchez because all he did was cut back onto his stronger foot from the left, although it was super effective)

While i don't disagree with all that's been said, our attacking options are not our problem at the minute. Right back, center back and holding mid are far more important and later on a left back. We have invested heavily in attack and we do not now struggle to score, in fact we are scoring as much as any team. Its purely our defending that is holding us to ransom. I actually think our attack is as good and exciting as it has been for years.

If we keep Ozil Pea and Lacasette the we have to play 3 4 3 with the full backs being eithr wingers who also have to be fullbacks or fullbacks who have to be wingers.
You can't play Pea Mesut Lacasette and 2 wingers and 2 fullbacks all at the same time.

I'd like to see 433, but effectively 4213
Torreira xhaka/ guen
Ozil
New winger laca pea
The best form of defence is a good offence, make the opposition full backs fear going forward, that's not the case when either Ramsey or ozil are the wide player, most full backs will catch them. Chelsea, City and Liverpool all play 433 with fast wingers and Chelsea and Liverpool especially are more reliant on the wingers than the forwards, if PEA embraces the position he should be able to remain just as lethal with the added space afforded to him.

Do you think Pea has it in him to be a really top supporting winger rather than the star attraction main striker Eden mate?
I'm just not sure that's using him to his absolute strength and it would be the same with Lacasette too.
In my mind you either play both down the middle or sell one a buy a true wide player in his place.
Just my view but surely you've got to use what you have to their strengths or swap what you've got.

For me - two up front : PEA and Laca

No compromise for either

Then either 4 4 or 3 5 behind them

In the 4 4 2 - Ozil plays the Pires role or dropped

In the 3 5 2 ( my preferred ) - he’s centre stage at the front of the 5 in the middle.

The winger doesn't have to be supporting and can be the main attraction as shown by salah and hazard and messi and ronaldo in their previous incarnations, whether PEA can or wants to play their, I don't know, but a fluid interchanging front 3 of him laca and someone else could be wonderful. I want to see them both, 2 up top could work, but emery seems reluctant as do most systems these days it's either 1 or 3.

I totally agree SY mate if used to thier strengths I think they could score 50 to 60 goals between them apposed to the 30 the 35 we will probably get as we are.
Mesut is the perfect man to compliment them both too.
I agree too about the 3 4 1 2 as it would buy the full backs sometime when we lose possession ancient stop them needing to be in two places at one time constantly.
