Pleasing result and the first clean sheet under Emery, despite an unconvincing performance until we scored after an hour.
Superb performances from Cech and Torreira, whilst Holding came on after 30 mins for Sokratis and played well.
Ozil was dreadful.
The interesting thing under Emery is that we seem to have discovered the art of winning whilst not playimg particularly well. The strange thing is that the improvement defensively which was expected, hasn't really happened and perhaps the lack of defensve cover from the three attacking midfield players is virtually non-existent, which results in being decent going forward, but still struggling when defending and against the top teams we son't get away with it. In our great teams of 98 and 04, anearly all the midfiled players could and did defend, except perhaps one player in each midfield, Overmars in 98 and Pires in 04. We barely get a tackle out of Ozil, Ramsey and Aubameyang. Perhaps we needs to bring in a midfield player in the 3 when we play top teams. Guendouzi or Maitland-Niles when fit could come in and give more defensive stability.

Yeah I think you can only play one of Ozil. Ramsey or Miki in the single Central AM role 3 into 1 does not go, as when you try and play more than one of them the team is to top heavy and unbalances the side. We should play both Lacca and Pea up front Emery then needs to pick one of Ozil or Miki behind as a AM, Sell Ramsey tbh he is not worth 200K+ he wants.

Then have 3 more combative midfielders behind in Torreira, Elneney and Guendouzi. We have no natural wide midefilders so we are still trying to put players out there that are better more central.

Totally agree Ryan Ozil Miki Aaron in the same team is like doing a weekly shop that consists of champagne chocolate and custard only, all look very appealing on paper but come midweek your going to run out of steam without some dependable sustenance.
Keep the champagne because let's face it we all like a bit of champers in our life's but ration the chocolate for when the champagne isn't available and ditch the over rated custard completely.

yeah like buying all Chocolate and Champagne in your weekley shop but no bread and Milk, like the analogy.

I think we won yesterday more because of Evertons problems. They haven't beaten us away for 20 odd years, i think and have no wins away against the top six in 28 games or 1 win in 45. It is a bit like us, no cajones.

I can't see any benefit having Ozil on the right, he has to play as number 10 for me. Ramsey always looks better as the advanced one of a midfield pair - preferably Torreira who looks more accomplished than Xhaka at putting himself about and sniffing out threats. In the absence of a natural wide player, I would be happy to see Mhiki on the right and Auba on the left (even though he sometimes looks a bit lost there) with Lacca up front. All bets off if we secure a serious bit of pace in January.

All in all though, scraping a win after playing badly is a good sign.

So far we have lost the two everyone expected us to lose and won the 4 in which we were favorites.
So by that calculation we could lose home and away to Liverpool Chelsea City United and even Spurs and still get 84 points and top 3 finish.
It's been a while since we achieved to our capabilities in the league and so far that's exactly what we are doing, no more admittedly but very pleasingly no less and that's got to be progress in anyone's book.

Gunner, i would like to think we aren't going to lose every game against the top six and i very much doubt we will win every game against the rest either. We just need to get our obvious problems sorted and all the players singing from the same hymn sheet and we have the quality to win most of our games. I don't think we are as good as some are saying but i think we are better than some others are saying. We just need a bit of surgery.

True Steve but my point was really we are currently winning what on paper should be winnable games rather than drawing or losing those games, obviously we will slip up somewhere at some stage but if we can be dominant in the games we should be dominant 8/ 10 times and pull off 1 in 3 pleasant surprises too then we have a chance of making top 4 which would be excellent in Dicks first season. The odds are obviously still against us because I think Chelsea City and Liverpool will definitely make up 3 of the top 4 so it's 2/ 1 against us getting the other spot.
I'd make United slight favourites for that other place with us and Spurs 50/ 50 due to their lack of investment and having so many players carrying a world cup hangover.
