As much as your'e all fellow Gooners and I wouldn't have a bad word to say about any of you, I do find that so many of us are divided in our opinions and its quite shocking! I'll admit that I'm rarely agreed with on this page but maybe that's because i'm from a different era of the game. Some of us want to improve on last season by signing players to 'fill in' for a year and as long as we only lose 10 games this season then happy days. Whereas some of us want to see a new era built around a select few class signings and then let the squad do the rest. I want to see Arsenal win the champions league and if you sign some younger world class players then the squad has time to gel and become united. If you sign a few aging players then they play for a season and then you have bring more players in to the club to replace them straight away! Liverpool have worked tirelessly for several seasons and brought in young players which are now hitting their prime, plus a few excellent additions of late. That's the way it should be done. Sacrifice and work hard for a couple of years and BUILD a squad, not plug it with temporary players. We also have a quality select few from our academy that could shine if coached correctly and this is something I'm very eager to see develop.

The problem is Glen we've tried bringing in young players with potential for years now and absolutely none of them have worked out as we'd hoped despite all the their potential, Ramsey is the last man Standing of a long list of young players with who we were going to achieve great things in the future.
I think first and foremost we need to build a solid now base and build from that by slowly but surely adding more and more quality while bringing down the age as we go.

I agree we need to build a solid now base. I also think you need to find the balance between building a base now, and allowing the young stars time and more importantly, room, to develop. I'd love an exciting youngster to come in, like the rumored Adli or Pavard. Maybe add Dembele (dreaming) and allow them to develop with Maitland-Niles, Willock and Nelson. We have some outrageous talent coming through, so building a base now with experienced players such as Sokratis and Lichsteiner makes sense to me.

I agree Gunner but the younger people we have brought in were not really good enough to begin with. We need to be signing those 22-27 year old players who have proven themselves over 2 or 3 seasons but the key problem with that is the money! Those players now cost a fortune but at some point Arsenal will need to jump on the bandwagon or see themselves always sitting bottom of the pile of 'BIG' clubs. We all know it but won't accept it. West ham brought in Evra on a free and the world thought it was a typical mid table club thing to do. We are now doing the very same thing so what makes us any different?

05 Jun 2018 12:28:24
It's easy to pick examples to suit both points of view Glen mate, for every Evra at West ham there is a Wes Morgan at Leicester, bringing in older younger and in between isn't an exact science and there is no magic formula that says 10 of this age 3 of that age etc.
It's not about where you by your ingredients or how much you pay for them it's always about how you put them together and blend them that ultimately decides if what you serve up is 5star or dodgy meal.
There are obvious ways to do things like spend 3,4 or 500 million and there ways that take a bit more thinking about and planing but if money was the only way City would have won the league every season since 2008 and Spurs wouldn't have finished 3rd 2nd 3rd the last 3 seasons.
Spend spend spend policy has worked for some but not everyone and since sir Alex left United haven't stopped spending but haven't come close to matching where he left them.
The last 5 seasons if you look at Spurs v United for both spending and final league places it shows money isn't always the answer or the only way forward.

Correct, but when has bringing in temporary replacements ever worked? It hasn't. let's get solid for 12 months and then have to replace them to make us solid again because they're getting on a bit (when they were getting on a bit in the first place) . If we start going off of football to building houses and dodgy meals, then in my opinion you buy quality bricks not used ones or cheap ones. let's get solid yes but let's build a squad and not settle for short term options that will need improving in 12 months time. Buy a class CB, buy a class DM, buy a class winger and then let Emery work with the team, improve us and move forward.

If we need 7 players and have say 120 million to spend, i'd start off with a list of players for each position I needed and take into account who I could get for free plus who would cost 10 million or under and 20 million or under ect and come with a list of targets to fill all positions needed within that budget.
That would seem the sensible way to go about things.
This summer will need a big rebuild so the cash we have available needs to go a long way but hopefully in the summers that follow it will be a case of just 1 or 2 players needed each year.

05 Jun 2018 14:00:04
Yeah hopefully! Maybe this would be the prime time to look at the set up, the manager, the position we are in and say right let's invest some more to start off on the right foot. I don't see it but you never know what will happen! Hopefully all the rumors flying around will take attention away from the people we are actually trying to sign. I would like to see at least one big name to be fair!

Let's hope come August the club has somehow managed to get everyone on board and fairly happy if not all totally 100%.
If we go into this season a lot less obviously weak then personally I will be happy, no mater who you sign none of us know for sure how things will turn out but last season looked horrible before it started and it certainly lived up to its billing that's for sure :-)

Its not necessarily about individuals but the total sum of the parts. Remember we have two chances to get back into the champs league. We need two teams, we ultimately failed last year, this guy Emery knows the score. Both cup comps and the league require different teams and both teams require competition. We need older and younger players to get the best out of each other.

I think we have to just back Emery and the backroom boys whoever they bring in, Wether we personally rate them or have ever heard of them and whether they are 25 or 35, give everyone a chance and until they give us reason to doubt them let the new management team do their thing.

Hi, late into the fun debate.

We built a team with kids and kids make mistakes. Then when they got to 25 to 27 they left because of lack of medals or they stayed as they weren’t quite good enough. How long did it take Kos to develop.

We have a budget - simple and we need to mix it up. Youth and experience. I am sure we have youth coming through and will buy youth but they need generals / experienced players who have won things to teach them the way. This fits in with our budget and should deliver a great blend.

Wasn’t our last Centrehalf a young Greek?

We need a short term and a long term plan running side by side as we build for the future but we eat off today’s kills. We have to start winning stuff to build on.

The press are clueless and linking us with everything and everyone. I trust Emery to spend his budget wisely and to get the balance right. It’s a balance so let’s see all his signings before we judge him.

Victoria Concordia crescit.

I think if Dick rates the kids we have that's cool and if he don't that's cool too, Dick doesn't yet have those special Arsenal glasses that makes everything look wonderful that isn't.
Unbiased unemotional view with lots of experience outside the club to give him a good comparison to who is and isn't good enough in the real world.
