Equal pay for women as men for doing the equivalent job.
The bbc and itv are under pressure as are many supermarkets and other industries.
John Mcenroe earns 150,000 for Wimbledon fortnight while Marina Navratilova gets 15,000 for the same two weeks work.
Is football immune?
Will Arsenal be allowed to pay Mesut 350k a week and a female player £500?

{Ed033's Note - People shouldn't use the word 'equivalent' unless it is equivalent. There's multiple factors usually involved, which makes 2 people's job not equivalent. In your examples it's market forces probably being the most important factor. If we all stopped watching male football and started watching female football, then the female player would earn a lot more and Mesut would earn a lot less.

Is or was Navratilova doing the same job and as many hours as Big Mac. Is she as good at her job as him, is it unequal. There is equal and there is equal. Women tennis players get same prize money as men, they play less sets, is that equal?

{Ed033's Note - Good points steve, 40 - love, i think.

19 Mar 2018 20:45:27
Ed, i don't get all this equal stuff at all, what's equal. People get paid for their ability, popularity, brains, braun and many other things. We aren't equal.

{Ed033's Note - Exactly steve.

Too much political correctness now
The world was a lot better place when women bought up their own kids and taught them manners and respect. kids fear nothing Now,
I'd pay them to stay at home and bring up their own kids properly
Am I allowed say that these days.

{Ed033's Note - you should be able to say that Leahy

I think when it comes down to sport and TV it is very much star appeal that dictates the pay scale.
Adele is worth much more per appearance than most male pop stars and Oprah Winfrey and male chat show host that's just the way it is.
But in everyday life inequality between genders is still comon place and now the balls rolling ancient high profile I'm pretty sure it's going to stretch very far and wide.

19 Mar 2018 22:39:22
Are the viewing figures the same for Women’s / Men’s finals?

Wimbledon took the less controversial option and led the way with equal pay

Are the commentators BBC employees or subcontractors open to market forces?

19 Mar 2018 20:27:46
I totally agree with market forces argument Ed033 mate, diffrent people in front of the camera have different viewer attraction, how much is going to be the argument in my opinion.

Would a court deem Mesut to be worthy of 700 x that of a woman player both employed by Arsenal?

Could be interesting in the years ahead and I think we will end up with pay grades in all jobs that are transparent and throughout an industry from the very top to the bottom run too.

{Ed033's Note - Hopefully political correctness won't get in the way too much.

So do I on society. children and young adults are out of hand now.
No respect, bad attitudes, No one to answer to. i blame the parenting.
And I have 3 daughters
I live with 4 women and we all get on great, the most of the time.

19 Mar 2018 23:26:17
12 it would be good if we lived in a society where mum or dad could work around the children but unfortunately many households in modern Britain with 2 people working 40 hours on minimum wage still rely on food banks to survive. One wage pays the rent while the other has to feed clothe and pay the bills for the family.
At grass roots thus is the real problem for both genders.

The whole pay inequality is complete codswallop. Based on the same rules every male footballer playing in leagues 1 and 2 should get the same salary as premiership players, as they do exactly the same job. However we all know why they don't, because they are not as good.

Same goes for women's football, both from a commercial perspective, and from outright skill. In fact if I was a semi-pro male footballer I would be majorly peed off if I found that any female footballer was earning significantly more, seeing as any part time male football team would absolutely destroy any top female team. If people want a reminder of how big the gap is in quality, play Wimbledon as a mixed competition and see how many female players make it through to week 2. I would put my life savings on it being a big fat zero.

62 I agree with you, it's a hard one. my wife does a few hours when the kids are at school. but I see young teenage kids round where I live picking on the weaker people, old people and it does my head in, I've had a few words with some of them but i try to mind my own business .

I know some of their parents, but the parents don't give a toss. My child wasn't there or my child wouldn't do that.
No respect for their parents, and vice versa so what do you do.
Then they moan there's nothing to do, There's loads to do,
My 3 play football, dance, play music.
But their parents are too lazy to bring them to these places putting time in to them.
I sacrifice going out, doing things that I like to do so that my kids can do these things.

{Ed033's Note - Possibly a lot of parents think they can let the schools do the parenting. Not a good idea from my point of view.

Perhaps McEnroe is simply better at his job than Navratilova or his agent negotiated a better deal.
I have always believed that the best person for the job should get it, irrelevant of gender, race, etc.
Of course if a man and a woman do exactly the same job, such as a cashier at a bank, then they should be aid the same salary.

12 I hear what you are saying mate but an awful lot of people just don't have the luxury of being able to work around their children mate, just surviving is a dialy weekly monthly battle.
When you are able to spoil your kids now and then as we all like to its much easier to be tough on them when they step out of line but when you are carrying around a ton of guilt for all you can't give them and working so hard neither of you can give them the time and attention you'd love to it rally is tough for people mate.
I'm not making excuses for people but low wages and crazy private rent rates are putting an awful lot of families in Britain under unacceptable strain.
For private landlords want to charge more and more yet give poorer and poorer accommodation in return and bosses want to offer 0 hours contracts on minimum wage but expect workers to jump at their will.
It's realy tough out thier for an awful lot 2 parent families both working full time through necessity rather than choice mate.
