Why hasn't Mesuts Arsenal career worked out quite how we all hoped it would back on that magical night in 2013?
No doubt he arrived a huge star of world football who's joining us shocked our premier league rivals when he joined us but is going to leave us with many fans less than disappointed to see him go.
What went wrong and why didn't he shine as brightly in an Arsenal shirt as he has else where?

He obviously can work! He had that great season and started last season well in terms of goals. I also think he gets lots of stick and mostly it's undeserved . It's a funny one 62 mate.

I agree Sanogo mate he does get undeserved stick quite often and much of the work he does without the ball goes unnoticed by many fans.
Pep once described him as the best player in the world without the ball because of how he created space for others to play in.
But none the less he arrived a Superstar and will leave without to many fans shedding a tear, it will be a while before we sign a player of his stature again, Denis Bergkamp is the only player I can think of who arrived with such a high profile in world football.

Ozil is a luxury that the prem and arsenal can't accommodate. He needs in arsenal two holding mids to allow for the fact he doesn't defend. The prem 90% of the time is attack and defend, the latter is not in his armery, so to have him you have to have a contingency for that. Bergy tried to tackle in a fashion but he still had two dependable tacklers behind him.

Yeah your right mate . A very similar signing in reputation to bergkamp. Obviously no where near. To be fair I've been waiting for a striker who would benefit from ozil. Lacazette appears to offer some hope but I think he has been hounded a little bit.

John Jenson?

I really like the guy, he has undoubted talent but I think the vast majority of fans are not keen on a player who'd rather duck a challenge or pull out of header.

It just looks so bad and noticeable that lots don't see beyond that.

There are very few really talented players if any but him that do that.

Ultimately play him in the right place with the right players behind him and he can be awesome but I think it was ed02 who said Madrid got rid because they didn't think they could win the Champions League with him and they've done fairly well in that comp since he left.

Games against Chelsea where we turn up and do a job without him don't help his cause.

All good and very constructive replys lads. It's such a shame because I think we all agree the man is pure quality and although he certainly hasn't been close to Bergys standard he did have all the ingredients to get close when he arrived.

i was absolutely thrilled when he arrived. I believe he would have been brilliant in Bergkamp's role in the teams Bergkamp played in. Allowed a free role in and around a striker such as Henry and with midfield players such as Vieira, Gilberto and Freddie doing the leg work.

We all were mate, it's just such a shame things didn't work out how we all hoped they would for both Mesut and us.
I'm not sure how long it will be before we see another signing of his stature at Arsenal, I'm sure someone will come along sooner or later and develop into a world star as Henry did but actually signing a ready made version who will get everyone excited from day 1 looks a long way off.
