Watching last night's 'The Debate' with Thierry Henry and Alan Smith highlighted the problem against Leicester and in general, that we don't defend as a team. I mentioned previously that we knew we had a problem against eicester as 5 CBs were out. However, I couldn't understand why Elneny Xhaka, Bellerin and Oxlade were so far forward, leaving little protection for the makeshift back three. In addition Kolasinac, played at CB, was often in and around the Leicester box. I understand that Wenger isn't insistent on the defensive side of the gam, but as a player, I cannot imagine ignoring the defensive side of the game. In the old days we saw the players take control, with Adams, Vieira, even Henry at times ensuring players covered back. The reason managers such as Mourinho are so successful is that they instruct players to work hard defensively. Indeed I believe that the toot are punching above their weight as Pochettino sets the team out well and they work hard as a unit. To score against Man U or the Toot you really have to earn a goal, whereas at Arsenal and Liverpool, soft goals are often conceded and both teams rely upon the offensive side of their game way too much and won't win titles. The last Arsenal team that won the league had true defensive midfield players such as Gilberto and full backs that could defend. Bellerin and Ox are both converted wide t Barcplayers and neither player can a . Man City paid over £50m for Walker, as he can defend as well as attack. Quite why Wenger doesn't see this is beyond me. Kolasinac can revert to left back and he can tackle, but tends to be more offensive, which is a worry. Assuming we sell Oxlade, we should bring in a RB that can defend as competition for Bellerin. Even the great Barcelona teams worked their socks off defensively, whilst we carry players defensively who can't defend; Ozil, Iwobi, Bellerin, Gibbs, etc. We must sort this out quickly, hopefully Lehman coming in may help as I can't imagine him being shy in this respect.

{Ed001's Note - Gilberto is a player you have never replaced. One of my favourite Arsenal players him, you could see a difference in the team when he played and when he was missing. It was like night and day.}

One of my mates is a man utd fan and yesterday when we were talking about the weekends games he was so excited about utd, he kept saying they were big strong fast and really worked hard.
Made me feel quite nostalgic about the Arsenal of a decade or more ago.

I'm not saying this utd team will be the new invincibles but from what my mate said they sound much more like them than we have looked for many a year.

Absolutely Gunner62, Wenger's best days were with a tall, athletic, physical team, set out in a 4-4-2 or 4-4-1-1 formation. As soon as we changed formation and used smaller, technical players, we were never the same. Man U and most Maurinho teams always have/ had a physical prescience. Quite why Wenger went away from this aspect and never returned beggars belief.

Couldn't agree more Ed001. Gilberto was absolutely brilliant and not enough credit is given to him for how good he actually was!

Sadly though I just don't see that many players in world football who you can compare to him at this time.

Our last 4 signings of importence: Lacazette, Kolasiniac, Xhaka and Mustafi, all strong and fast and hard working. I think we are getting there:)

He's actually my old boss Sanogo :-) apart from the fact he's a united fan he's a good lad :-)
I didn't watch the United game but by all accounts they were pretty good in the opening game and from what I've read about them seems to match up with what my mate says.
It's no real surprise as Mourinho like him or not is a winner and it's because of him I make them favourites for this season's title, he probably won't be there in 3 years time admittedly but I'm pretty sure he will leave United with a title or maybe 2 to add to his already impressive CV.

I still had to rub my eyes with R.G. giving spurs credit.
