Interesting shirt sales stats in the Star today

Spurs sold 1/ 3 of the number of shirts we did

Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal about par on 850,000 to 900,000 sales but way in front were Utd at 1.75m!

Our shirt sponsorship should be in line with Liverpool based on sales. Not sure if it is.

{Ed002's Note - That is not how it works. The sponsorship deal is nothing to do with sales of shirts.}

How does the shirt deal with Puma work as well as Emirates?

{Ed002's Note - Puma pays Arsenal a fixed amount for the length of the contract in order to be the kit manufacturer. The money raised from shirt sales goes to the manufacturer, the distributor and then the smallest amount to the retailer, who can make extra adding numbers and names to the shirts. If the club are the retailer (club shop, club website etc.) then they get the retailers cut. The manufacturer (Puma, Adidas, Umbro, Nike etc.) pay the club an amount each year which allows them to manufacture and sell the shirts using the correct logos etc.. That is how they justify the money given to the club. So if you walk in to a high street store and buy a Liverpool or Arsenal shirt - nothing goes to the club. So the income from shirts is fixed to the £xM or whatever Puma, Adidas, Nike etc. pay the club plus a small amount for reselling through the club retail outlets (shop, web).

There are a few clubs that have negotiated different deals with manufacturers (Real Madrid with Adidas and Barcelona with Nike are the two obvious examples) based upon joint reselling ventures.

Emirates is nothing to with the shirts aside from the deal they have with Arsenal as the primary club sponsors puts their name on the shirts. They also have the stadium named after them, their name plastered around the ground on match days, their name on television when interviews are being conducted etc., the loan of players for endorsements and so on. For this, they pay Arsenal handsomely.

Arsenal earn more from their kit deal than Liverpool and I see no reason that the club would want to pick up your idea and earn less. Perhaps Arsenal could alo put their season tickets (the most expensive in the UK) in line with Liverpool's?.}

I might be wrong, but I think about 90% of revenue raised from shirt sales goes directly to the kit makers/ sponsors.

{Ed002's Note - None of it goes to the sponsors.}

Very good reply.

Thanks Ed.

Thanks Ed - I was suggesting that our deals should be on par with Liverpool and Chelsea with the manufacturers as we sell just as many shirts. I didn't realise ours was better with Puma than Liverpools.
Also - great to see us sell so many but Utds sales are ridiculous!
Thanks again.

{Ed002's Note - If you do crave to be like Liverpool and Chelsea would you be happy with Arsenal taking a drop in income from their shirt deal and from their matchday revenue?}

16 Oct 2016 18:44:29
Ed- I thought Utd had a 75m per season deal, Chelsea 60m. Arsenal 30m and Liverpool 25m

So we are above Pool but way behind Chelsea despite shirt sales being similar in volume this season.

{Ed002's Note - Chelsea have a new deal starting next season which is a lot higher. I will say again - it is nothing whatsoever to do with shirt sales. You cannot pick one item out of the sponsorship buck and whine about it unless you are willing to accept Arsenal's income dropping for matchday revenue and commercial income then you should write to the club telling them you crave being like Liverpool. If you think Arsenal deserve more then try and win the Champions League, the Europa League and the Premier League. Arsenal are simply not as attractive as Manchester United and Chelsea to sponsors.}

Kit manufacturers etc want to be associated with winners, everyone boot manufacturer wants the best players endorsing their boots because the kids want to wear what Bale Ranaldo and Messi are wearing.
The successful you are on the field the more attractive you are off it, if we can turn our brand of sexy attractive football into being seriously competitive home and abroad again the sponsors will be trying to out bid each other to be associated with Arsenal.

Thanks Ed - great info and sorry for the additional Qs.

{Ed002's Note - Not a problem and something you may be interested in related to emrging markets - which is certainly of interest to sponsors:

For a while now the stats for fans are based, as you would expect, on the number of fans on social media and that helps provide the demographics for where those fans are based. Top 10 at the last time of asking found Liverpool at number 7 ahead of PSG, Manchester City and AC Milan. Liverpool were just behind Bayern Munich, with Arsenal and Chelsea ahead of them. There was then a significant leap to Manchester United, Real Madrid and, at number 1, Barcelona.

In terms of the more precise demographics for the five Premier League clubs:

Manchester United has the most supporters in both India and China - and given the size of population in those countries it is not a surprise to see them so far ahead. Their support is growing in America.

Chelsea are the club with the most supporters most in mainland Europe, Asia, Middle East, Central America and South America. Their support is growing quickly in America and they will soon be well clear of Manchester United and Arsenal.

Arsenal are traditionally the most followed Premier League club in Canada and the USA and, very significantly, throughout Africa (except South Africa) but the USA support is moving rapidly away from Arsenal and toward Manchester United and, in particular, Chelsea.

Liverpool has the highest number of supporters of any club in the UK, the Republic of Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and is doing well in some parts of Asia. The Middle East is not an area where Liverpool are particularly strong in terms of a fan base. But as Liverpool has the highest number of supporters in the UK it is likely that the strongest areas for them in the Middle East will be where the most British ex-pats are based - so UAE and then Saudi.

Manchester City are not leading the way in any one market but are picking up new supporters faster than any other side. This is a reflection of their success.}

I guess that makes a lot of sense. Liverpool and Utd have a lot of historical support due to their pedigree and success. Liverpool in champs league but more be in the past than present. Utd have had success for a number of years and have promoted their brand exceptionally over the years.
New money and success has been Chelsea ( lots of kids wearing Chelsea tops due to recent successes ) and now City in the EPL.
We really need to get back on the major trophy haul and start doing better in champ league or we will get left behind even more than Utd are doing today to us.

Of course the club make a percentage of the retailing fee at their outlets, to suggest otherwise is simply not correct.
