Eds random question not specifically arsenal related.

We've seen transfer fees go through the roof in recent years, largely due to the influx of money into the sport. (I'm going to leave the prem tv deal out of this as it complicates things in my opinion) oil money from the Arab states and Russia, Chinese state money now and big American business money the main sources at a glance.

So prices went through the roof, because there wasn't the quantity of truly elite players around to satisfy the new demand. So my question is, why haven't clubs dramatically scaled up their youth systems to try and produce a larger quantity of elite players? Or have they? I understand things take time and genetics and general talent have a say in the end product of a youth academy, but with the money on offer for players, selling clubs like Everton, Porto, benfica etc have made huge sums of money (I hear Everton is debt free now? Is that still true? )
Why don't we see the brand names of football like arsenal, man utd etc investing more in grass roots football?, because to me there's serious money to be made!

I'm basing all this on just my observations of what I see in my local area and through general football reading, so it may be a twisted view, literally was just curious though.

Cheers in advance.

{Ed025's Note - some still do gav, everton for example have a great youth policy and have made players like rooney and stones to a certain extent household names and its helped with financing the club, some wont take the chance as academy,s can be very costly to run and its a bit of a gamble but i think it can only help in the development of young players especially english to enhance the national side mate..

I think England should pay clubs for the use of their players during tournaments say £1 million performance, this would encourage teams to produce players for the national side as a team that could produce 5 players who played 5 games at a finals would receive a £25 million bonus.
This could be funded by a levy on the TV money the premier league brings in meaning instead of each club receiving £80 million they got £75 each million with the FA receiving the other £100 million.
If a team produced 1 England player they would break even and be quids in if they produced 2, perfect? No but with some fine tuning and tweaking it could be.

62 - I agree but who would have been paid for Carrick, Terry, Cole, lampard etc? Utd and Chelsea or Hammers and us?
It's not always the producers who have them at the height of their career.

Cheers ed and g62.

Everton and Southampton for me in recent years have carried the youth academy torches.

Southampton from what I understand, with proper business management and attention to detail of the super ceo chap who was there turned their whole club around through academy investment.

I know very little about youth football but I do remember reading some time ago that Barcelona had nurtured dos Santos as a player to be sold to help finance the others developments, as he wasn't thought to have a long term future at the club.

Since writing this, real madrid's shop window environment popped into my head. €20million for di maria, isco, higuan etc then sell for €50-60million seems to be serving them well as a second revenue stream. Dortmund seem to average a pretty successful set up too.

When the wealth bubble pops in this sport there isn't half going to be some worried faces I imagine!

{Ed025's Note - and that time will come gav, the future has to be the young guys we nurture and im happy that everton seem to be doing that, but you have to give these youngsters a chance in the first team and blood them in properly, the likes of the bigger clubs seem content to buy foreign and the youngsters overlooked but hopefully this will change and a crop of really good home grown talent can flourish..

Good question SY I'd have thought the easy and fairest way would be for either the fee paid to reflect the players potential for playing in finals or the selling clubs to negotiate a percentage of any funds earned,
John Stones will potentially win 100 England caps and may play in say 7 tournament finals wity an average of 4 games per tournament bringing in 28 million, so it depend on the deal Everton did with Barnsley and again the deal city did with Everton at the time of signing.

It's a fair point with the wanting instant success you make ed. I can't really see why with the revenue streams clubs have they can't do both though personally. I guess they probably will with the tv deal now.

It seems like everyone knows, and has known for a while, that the breakaway league is coming and they want to get into the "elite clubs group" before the real polarisation of money starts. Those who invest heavily and don't make the grade will be thoroughly screwed I'd imagine.

I hope football doesn't get that lame.

{Ed025's Note - i hope so too gav but it seems like the have,s and have not,s gap is getting wider mate..

I think a European or world league would be the end of football in a few short years, and also think some clubs who might be rubbing their hands now might find thier not as big a part of the plan as others would have them believe right now and would shortly after any breakaway find themselves extremely expendable.

On the subject of using the youth ed, are you as surprised as I am that Galloway got loaned out? I think he showed last season that he has potential to be a good full back in the PL, I guess Koeman decided that he's more of a a useful reliable full back for a mid table team as opposed to a great full back for a eeurope-hopeful team?

OR maybe i'm just forgetting that even nowadays clubs do send players on loan with their development being the genuine interest (not just for shop window purposes) and perhaps he'll be used in the future.

{Ed025's Note - im hoping it is just for experience TPG, i think galloway has the potential to be a really good full back or center half, the thing is that we are quite strong in those area,s at the present and at least he is getting game time which will benefit him for the future mate..
